Larry Corbett wrote the below on another thread.. as it contains info about other (National?) UK nature Photography resource conventions. I think this will be off interest to UKNP participants so I have split it of into its own thread so the conversation doesn't get interwined confused...

I think there may be a joint ZPC, NPS, NPP, RPS Nature Group convention in Aug 08 which i will definately be attending so maybe i'll meet a few uknp'rs there

for those who are confused

ZPC Zooalogical Photographic circle (very prestigious)by invitation only
NPP Nature photographers portfolio by invitation only
NPS Nature Photographic Society by invitation only (i'm a member)

Larry, the NPP, ZPC event is this year at Horncastle - I will be attending.

I haven't heard anything about any joint convention. Can you provide details? Source? It just so it doesn't clash with, or is to close to, our 3rd UKNP convention scheduled for Jan 2009. I can also try to insure our members get the opportunity to attend.

I'd appreciate it if you would provide the website details for what you call the NPS as I haven't heard of that society and cannot find it on the web.

The RPS is the granddaddy of us all,its web site is here
The NPP webite is Here but it isn't up to date.
The ZPC's webite was Here but is AWOL at the moment.

To be honest I think they are are all bit behind the times in comms when compared with the like of NPN & UKNP. I also think UKNP has a better standard of UK/European Nature photography displayed; but you be your own judge.

Didn't know you were a member of the NPP Tom, I was put on the witing list for that nearly 6 years ago and am still waiting!!

The NPS is a postal portfolio and was formed in 1913, we currently have 22 members mostly Fellows of the RPS and most are also members of the ZPC and RPS Nature Group, we don't have a website, we don't need one, we are a friendly group and membership is by invitation only amongst our members we have Magerate Hodge, Martin Whithers, Harold Grenfell, Tony Hamblin, Paul Keene, Jill Packenham, Phil Mugeridge etc etc we have our own biannnual convention which is in the April and held at wells, we may currently have an opening for a couple of new members but am not sure, There is talk of the joint convention taking place in Aug 08, as you may know traditionally it was in leicestershire, but it is now to be organised by somebody else at a new venue hopefully in the midlands area.
I heard talk of Nottinghamshire!?

Larry, looks as if there are a lot of these small private groups in the UK.
The NPP/ZPC joint bi-annual convertion is in Lincs @ Horncastle in Oct this year.

I am unsure about the one that was meant to be in Notts, it may be the one Geoff Simpson was trying to conviene called the British Nature Photography Festival on the 17th/18th November see here which I have been told has failed.

No it's definately not that one, the big joint convention is usually organised by Martin Whithers and brings together all the "private" societies along this the members of the RPS Nature group for a 3 day event of lectures, socailising and eating..foods always good...it's not open to the public..very much like the joint zpc and npp one only bigger..the last event was about 6 years ago at brooksby college near leicester, Martin doesn't want to organise it anymore so someone else is taking it on

yes i know tom  that's why i pasted it on so that people can get a feel for what the rps nature group is all about, I think it's a good group has a decent mag called the iris, but i feel it needs an influx of younger members and a reduction of the rps subscription fees for it and the likes of the zpc and nps to really survive long term in the modern world, i'm 36 and am always the youngest at the conventions

Its a shame Geoffs show failed, the west midlands bird fair for a time had a nature photography theme to it and we had lectures from the likes of Mike Lane, George Mccarthy, Chris Gommersall, Mike Wilkes but that seems to have died a death since the rspb took it over

what you are doing with your convention is great tom and one day i hope to attend, it's always good to meet up learn from others, nature photography can be a lonely business sometimes and i love to meet other photographers...slimbridge or donna nook is usually the place where nature photographers meet

LOL! Something I can`t argue with there, every time I have my hair cut only half grows back! :frown:

But what I meant was I`ve been nominated by 3 members and I`ve got in get in contact with Harold Grenfell sometime, and I`m a few years younger than you! hence me saying you may not be the youngest at the meetings.......but unfortunitly theres no disputing on the hair loss front not a chance
