Under Starry Skies.
Canon 5D, Canon 17-40mm @ 17mm, 24 seconds @ f5.6,
iso 1600, Gitzo1548/B1, remote release,etc.

Neatimage, Levels, curves, hue/saturation, added a fraction more canvas to the right as the chapel came a little too close to the edge after perspective corrections.

I noticed a bright red star shining and although references said that Mars was clearly visible that night I couldn't be sure whether it was Mars or a stuck pixel   , so cloned it out to be on the safe side

Hi,

Before last Monday's night shots get banished to the depths of the hard drive I thought I'd post one more.
The contrast between the deeply silhouetted chapel and the partially illuminated distant coastguard cottages caught my eye.
Unfortunately a lot of the stars and the colourful reflections in the cottage windows are unfortunately diminished at this small size which is a shame.

For anyone not familiar with the area and who may be interested. The buildings shown are St Aldhelm's Chapel and the old coastguard cottages. Perched right on the cliff top overlooking the stunning Dorset coastline the chapel is steeped in mystery.

One legend suggests that back in 1140 a bride and groom were sailing in the turbulent waters below St. Aldhelm's head whilst being watched from the cliff top by the brides father. A storm closed in, the boat capsized and the unfortunate couple were drowned. Rumour has it the chapel was built by the father in memory of the unlucky couple. The cross was once upon a time a light that was always kept burning to warn other sailors of the dangers below,or so the story goes.

Nice one, it probably was mars, it is very distinctive and easy to find. I used to always be-able to point out the main planets on a given night but have lost touch with them in the last few years. I very much like the movement and colour in the clouds here. Tristan

Lovely shot Justin :toast:

A fine composition, and the subtle lighting on the cottages adds a nice depth/ seperation between the foreground/midground areas.
