Alpine Falls (and how I stole Hans' shot)

Thanks for comments.

Great depth though. I really like it.

What do you think about chopping maybe 1/2 inch or less off the bottom?

Marc, I like this one.

I would just tone down that bright spot in the cloud on the top right....

Wait...same title too?

Very nice...you win. :toast:

Slightly frustrating.

Sorry, Hans. I must be out of touch lately with all this traveling. I forgot you'd posted one similar shot with the same title. More amazing yet, I had absolutely no idea where you had taken that picture, or that I had inadvertently taken a similar composition from the same spot - seriously! That's what you get for taking the only creek with a good Monkeyflower display around here  Were we not just shooting Sparks Lake on the same night too? Man, that is just weird.

Nice scene, Marc - the middle 1/3 looks soft to me, especially along the right border. I agree on your crop, too.

Hans, I liked yours, too - they're completely different images, and really not comparable.

Soft, huh? There's a comment I never thought I'd hear. Upon further inspection, it's mostly just mist related (at right) but looks much sharper on the original file than this web presentation.

I don't know about the crop. I think it looks good now, I like the fullness of the Monkeyflower bush. By cropping it I think it might look like something was left out. What about lightening the LRC and help fill it out the bottom a bit....?

Marc, if anything I appreciate this for the learning opportunity. Comparing the quality of your image to mine sent me to the bookstore to try to learn more about photography and processing. I also didn't even notice the composition that you created while I was there. That was a tight space in which to work and I'm impressed with what you got. You really did justice to this scene.

p.s. Kudos for the appropriate punctuation of the possesive form for a noun ending with "s."

Marc, I would not crop any off the bottom as I like the full bloom of the Monkeyflower bush, IMO. The triangle of flowers, falls, and peak keep my view looping in the photo. All around nice image!

It has a real painterly feel to me.. I like it..

Interesting, you'd like to lose 1/2" from the bottom, I'd rather see more of it. This looks like a tough exposure with the sun in the clouds. You nailed it, with just a hint of a hotspot at the UR that I bet you could eliminate with a little more PS. I wonder if you took any other angles, for example, with your tripod a little lower (if that was possible) to compress the 3 main elements here (monkeyflower, waterfall, and mountain)? That might've given you the shot you wanted without a crop that yoiu were mentioning in the OP.

I like all that's happening here, I'm interested in taking a stab at it one day (then I'd have something to POST :P)
