When does it ever stop! LOL. Canon just released information about their new flagship 1DS MkIII camera, 21.1 mega pixel, full frame SLR. They also introduced the the 1D Mk III, 40D and a new 14mm lens.
Posted by Darren White on August 20, 2007 at 1:00 PM
Wholly Hell!!!! I saw the new 40D and the Mklll but I did not hear about the new DS Mklll, will have to go check that out.....
Nikon is supposed to announce something this week too....would really love the D2x and 5D to drop in price......that would make camera shopping much easier for me!!!
I'm definitely getting a DSLR in the next 12 months, and it will probably be a Canon. I wish Nikon would make something (and something relatively affordable like the 5D) that would accept my Nikon primes, because that's what I enjoy shooting with. I'm not going to invest in DX lenses when I know I'll ultimately want FF coverage. Okay...enough gear talk from me.
Posted by Darren White on August 20, 2007 at 1:18 PM
Amazon has it for sale but there is no price...I am guessing around 12-15k for this beauty.....
they also say they are currently shipping.....but how can that be when it's not out till November!
Nah, I bet Canon will price it at $7995, just like all the other 1 series cameras have been when first introduced. I love my 5D, its a great size and the full frame is sweet. I'll stick with it for a few more years.

Ah crap! Now I have to find a way to make an extra $8,000
Posted by Jeremy Cram on August 20, 2007 at 2:03 PM
I'm gonna have to pick up alot of crap for this....
Posted by Rick Lundh on August 20, 2007 at 2:24 PM
I can understand a few people needing this camera...but you must ask yourself why you would buy this new camera? How big will you ever need to print? Unless you plan on having a huge gallery in Jackson Hole Wyoming or printing something to be hung on the side of the Empire State Building...there's no reason to get the camera or go above the 10-16 megapixels we have now.
Posted by Curtis Knight on August 20, 2007 at 2:34 PM
hmmm... I don't see a file size listed in the press release... But I do see that they went to the UDMA spec to speed up the download, so the files must be huge...
Hey Jeremy, do you get paid by the "piece"?
Posted by Mark Hudon on August 20, 2007 at 2:37 PM
For eight grand, I can't see it. My next camera will greatly have to improve the quality of my prints right now before I even think of buying it.
Posted by Marc Adamus on August 20, 2007 at 2:42 PM
Who would buy this camera? Me!!! I'm all over it. Placing my order as soon as possible. I just wish it had become available before my upcoming SW trip in October/November. I print 20x30's all the time and there is a LOT of room for improvement over a 10-16mp output at that size. For example, 12mp (4200 pixels) only gets you a 'high resolution file' printable to 14 inches, with maximum available details - 300dpi, across the spread. Theoreticly, you should be able to notice more detail in any print over that size when using more pixels, but the difference should only be really evident at larger sizes. Those of you selling a lot of prints in the 16x20 range still might not notice a big improvement worth the $. At 20x30, the difference should be glaringly obvious though. Canon continues to obliterate the competition. But one little catch - I'd recommened buying some really nice glass if you don't have it already for this camera. Some suspect that a lens like the 17-40 would have a difficult time being able to resolve details onto all those pixels. Add the new 16-35 and it becomes a $9500 camera. I can confirm a base price of $7,999.

Same AF system as the new 1DIII??? I'll wait for the 18MP Nikon.
Posted by Marc Adamus on August 20, 2007 at 4:24 PM
Even at the risk of sounding like I'm trying to make up a Nikon vs. Canon thing, I would point out that the majority of people who care about things like AF systems still shoot Canon - Sports, Wildlife and and Photojournalists especially. Personally, it wouldn't make much difference to me if it had the AF system of a circa 1995 rebel.
Posted by Erik Lundh on August 20, 2007 at 4:45 PM
I'm just wondering if there is a lens that out resolves this sensor. from what I have read and heard, the 1DSMKII needs better lenses to get the most out of the sensor.
Posted by Mark Windom on August 20, 2007 at 4:46 PM
I read somewhere that my D2Xs has a great AF system...haven't used it yet and probably never will. While I prefer Nikon for a variety of reasons I'm glad to see Canon coming out with new and improved high end gear.....we all win in the end.
Posted by Curtis Knight on August 20, 2007 at 4:52 PM
Marc and Erik, thanks for pointing out the lens resolution issues. It puts it all back into perspective for me. So when I "settle" for the 400D in a few months, I won't feel so bad
Posted by Marc Adamus on August 20, 2007 at 5:09 PM
There aren't that many issues. Obviously, Canon would never have made such a move if their lenses weren't up to the task - but you do need good glass. The new 16-35 was created for just this reason. Without getting deeply into optical physics, most Canon 'L' glass can resolve details onto 21+ million pixels. It is pushing the boundries though, and it's not likely you'll see anything exceed this resolution in the forseeable future. Don't expect this camera to be outdated in a couple years like its predecessors, for a varieity of reasons. So you have a while to save up at least.
Still giving arms and legs to accrue the funds necessary for a 5d. Judging by the detail of the images taken with that and a 17-40 lens; I could feel nothing less than content with that system for a few years.
Posted by Marc Adamus on August 20, 2007 at 6:15 PM
I forsee a good number of used 5D's on the market in the not too distant future, mine included.
Posted by Jeremy Cram on August 20, 2007 at 6:27 PM
I am probably going to get one, but will have to wait til the end of the first quarter next year.
I'll get one in about 3 years. I'm gonna use my 5d for a while and learn, learn, learn.
Posted by Darren White on August 20, 2007 at 6:51 PM
Well If my lucky numbers come up on Wednesday and I hit the 245 million on Powerball, I'll be getting one.....but I for now I am still toying with switching to a 5d or D200....60% 5D 40% D200
Posted by David Cowell on August 20, 2007 at 8:34 PM
If I were a landscape guy and willing to drop $8000 on a camera I'd probably skip right over that bad boy and head straight for a Mamiya 645ZD.
Dave
Posted by Marc Adamus on August 20, 2007 at 9:08 PM
Mamiya probably won't even be in business in a couple years if they are actually trying to sell a 22mp MF digital back system. There are too many advantages to the Canon line. Lens selection, speed, versitility, size, image storage, processor and more. And the Canon is $2000 cheaper, not including the savings in lenses if you don't already own a Mamiya system. Hassy's 39mp camera is far superior to the Mamiya system and I know a few who use it with excellent results, but with the lenses it's pushing $40,000. The H2D set the standard for the nitch market of MF digital.
Posted by David Cowell on August 20, 2007 at 9:46 PM
Yeah you're probably right about Mamiya. But with the intro of this new camera the gap is closing between the formats, exciting times are ahead! Until my D200 dies I'm not going to really worry a whole bunch about it......still fun to watch though

The player all of you are forgetting is Sony. It is widely known that sony will be introducing a FF pro camera in the next 6 months, and it's not like they don't know what they are doing, they have minolta's old SLR team with them. Minolta never stopped producing good camera machinery and glass, they simply fell behind technologically, which is where sony comes in.
Sony already owns the high end professional video imaging business, I don't think their goals in the DSLR arena are any less. That being said, that is a damn awesome camera Canon just announced!
Posted by Phil Knouf on August 21, 2007 at 1:23 AM
Well, looks like a super camera for this format. Very high quality! Unless I win PowerBall over Darren I don't think I will spring for this one just now. Spent the $8k+ last year for a new Arca Swiss 4x5 and some lenses. Yes, I still photograph with film. The Phase 45 39 MP back works great with this setup but would put me back over 30k. So I will still scan my trans. and print my 24x30's with the fine detail available to me with this format. Still, it can be a hassle to lug the equipment around and I would definently not call my system fast. But I just can't give up all the image controls in a 4x5 system and that detail in the 4x5 transparency.

If I were a Canon guy, which I'm not, I'd be much more interested in the 5D replacement rumors coming in at 16MP's for under $3000.
As a Nikon guy, I am very much interested in the D300 rumors, putting 12.5 MP's in an under $1700 body. (Remember, pixel density makes 12.5mp on a 1.5 crop about equal to 16-20mp on a FF in terms of overall resolution...)
As for 21MP, $8000 bodies, seems a bit crazy to shoot 35mm lenses when you really ought to be using medium format.
JMHO's.
Posted by Mike Sellers on August 21, 2007 at 7:26 AM
There are always a bunch of used and new 1ds Mark II bodies on ebay and maybe when the new camera comes out there will be a price drop on the used stuff.Used ones are selling for about $4,000-$4,500 right now so maybe that will drop down this winter and then I can acquire a 1ds Mark II !

Well, it was inevitable that a new camera would come out to replace the 1DsMKII. It's good to see that Canon keeps their edge.
But I'm siding with Rick on this. There is a need for some for this MP race, but unless you need extreme closeup detail in mega hugh prints, or you crop a major portion of your shots, you may be overspending here. For landscape shooting, I think a film large format + scanner becomes a serious consideration if you start throwing around $10k when you consider that no matter how good Canon gets with their lenses or sensors, the LF unit will let you change the plane of the lens to accommodate a deep DOF that 35 mm style cameras can't do, not even with a TSE lens. I've seen some nice LF stuff sold on FM for cheeeeep (relatively).
And I know some of you are selling really big prints, but I think most people are looking for a good sized print of maybe 18 x 24 or so to hang on a wall. To look at from across the room. With a decently sized matt and frame. So my 5D fills that bill very well.
But that's me (and Rick). If you have the need and the money, go for it! Sounds like you do, Marc. Let me know what you think of it.

Anybody know when this will be shipping/generally available at retailers? If my 5D does not resurrect from it's swim, I will be very tempted to get this (or a cheaper 1 series camera). After watching Art Wolfe on his show, snapping photos of bears in the rain without any raingear on his camera, I've been ever more convinced I need to get a weather-proofed cam.
Posted by Curtis Knight on August 22, 2007 at 5:28 PM
Hey Mike,
Speaking of Art W. I like how he stands out on the harpoon platform over salt water hand holding his camera with NO STRAP! Geez! I'd have the strap around my neck and wishing I had a backup tether attached to the rail!

If anyone has a 5D and will be upgrading let me know. I don't think I am ready for the 1DSMKIII but I will be getting something new in the next 3-6 months. Most likely a 5D but would prefer a used one as I don't see them dropping much in price. 1DSMKIII ($$$$) and 40D (cropped frame) announcements are on quite different playing fields and price ranges than the 5D IMO.
Posted by Darren White on August 22, 2007 at 11:35 PM
Adrian, Hold tight, the 5D replacement should be coming soon.....and that will drop the price of the 5D
