Okay, for those of you that can't wait ten years for the total solar eclipse and need an eclipse fix, set your alarm for next Tuesday morning, August 28. See the attached link

And, no, I will not be having an all night party for this one. I need to save up for the big blow out in ten years!

Best,
Don

Thanks Don, I may just have to drag my sorry you know what out of bed for this one. Heck I may even try to take a picture or two! :wavey:

I'm hoping this will be a spectacular event. A total lunar eclipse just at sunrise (where we're located) must happen only once every gazillion years. Thanks for the post, Don! BTW, has anyone asked you about the big Mars event on the same day? Strange what goes around on the internet...

Bill, Mars appearing as big as our Moon is a hoax. It will be a tad bit larger due to its closer orbit to us but definitely nothing to write home about.

Yeah, I knew it was a hoax several years ago when it first started going around. Seems like every August when Mars is a little closer to Earth it surfaces again. You'd think people would learn...

The original report actually was not a hoax but someone forgot to include the "when viewed through a 40x telescope" in the rest of the descriptions that have been circulating for years. I heard someone on the nightly news or CNN last year say this same thing - probably was the same news desk that reported the lodgepole pines were peaking in Colorado a few years ago in late September. It is a shame these days that so much of our national news is not only very poorly written and reported, but a lot of it is down right false. How many times have you seen CNN reporting as being "live" only to discover it was on tape, and had been repeated several times already. The news has gotten to be such a joke I hardly pay much attention to it any more. But, of course, when Mars gets to be the size of the full moon I will stand up and watch!

Thanks for posting the link. I'd forgotten about the eclipse. I rearranged my work schedule today, so I'm hoping to see the eclipse happen over Monument Rocks :). Here's hoping for calm winds and clear skies.

New at this any one got suggestions on the ways to shoot this without a telescope? Have a D80 with a18-70 and a 55-200 lens.
Cecil

Here is a pic I posted on here from March. Handheld (I forgot the tripod mount), 300mm. It works better with a tripod though :).

good luck, Rob.
