Calibration of new Dell Monitor

Hi guys, after my old PC died a couple of weeks ago, I just got a new Dell with a Dell 2407 ultrasharp widescreen.

How should I go around calibrating the new monitor ? I have a Spider - which I used to set up my old monitor a couple of years ago, - is that still what I should use nowadays ?

Can I use some of the pre-programmed profiles in the monitor, or should I create my own ? I have played a bit with the menu on the screen, and things does look quite different from what I'm used to - terminology wise.

Any help appreciated,

cheers, Helge

Hi Helge

I have the same monitor ( a couple in fact) and simply use the Spyder Express and it works fine for me

It's a great monitor by the way and I'm sure you'll get to love it

Helge...

Make sure you download the latest software for the Spyder. Also make sure you calibrate to as near to 100 cd/m2, some recommendations to calibrate to 140 are far too high.

Thanks for your suggestions! My Spyder is a pretty old version "Photocal 2.7", there are no new updates for that one, I guess.

I tried now, got settings of 101,5 in luminance and around 57-58 in each of the colours. But the result is terrible - flat, dark and to the greenish side.

Those of you who have calibrated this monitor with succes, may I ask what settings you have arrived at ?

You sure there isn't a new version of the software?

I haven't used the spyder for a long time as we now have the full blown calibrate anything Eye One package.... Your luminance is just about right,

You are calibrating to a gamma of 2.2..... 6500K ?

Does the software have a native white point profiling option?

As I said it has been a long time since I used a spider I having to guess here a little.

Hi Phil, newest version of the Photocalc on their download-page is 2.7.7 that one I have!

You are right I start by gamma 2.2......and 6500K

No, native white point profiling, it goes right to measure the colors. I have to get them within a rectangle, and with a calculated difference of below 0.5.

I managed to get a difference of 0.16 and the before mentioned luminance and color-values.

One obvious problem of the resulting profile is that white is not real white but some sick beige/white.

Sorry but going through the basics here Helge..

Adobe Gamma is disabled?

I'm surprised there is no native white point profiling, LCD's and laptops profile far better if you are able to use native because of their back lit nature... with a few exceptions...

If you are not getting a 'clean' white then something is way out that the profile is unable to compensate..... getiing things right is a two stage thing, the hardware calibration and the 'software' profile or LUT......

As a guide I have my desktop set to RGB values of 128 for each so that it is a mid grey at 100 cd/m2, also I have the bg in photoshop set to the same values, if they boh match I know my calibration/profile is correct. The destop is not profile aware, photoshop is.

Trying to help but its not easy at a distance ...

Thanks Phil, your help is very much appreciated. I think I should maybe upgrade to a newer calibration software.

Adobe Gamma is on the machine, should I delete it entirely ?

Hi Helge,

Just remove it from start..... even though you have done nothing with it, it may be causing problems, wish adobe would in fact make it an option to not install it...

At present the Eye One hardware/software solution is probably the best (personal opinion, but I use it to 'match' /calibrate and profile about 20 different workstations (including WPOY projectors etc) with very few problems.

Wish I was at my work computer as I could then send you reference files that would give a good indication of where the problem lies..

Best
