Jeremy, this is very interesting. First, the subject matter and second, the light/color temp range. I am very interested to know what the various times of day thus, lighting conditions are available to shoot this subject. Have you any experience with the light variations throughout the daytime there?
As for this shot in particular, regarding composition, I think it it very nice. Given the conditions of light, you did well. I'd like to see a bit more light on the BG, but that leads me back to my questions above.

I believe we arrived around 10 ish in the morning...? We stayed and shot for quite a few hours. Here is a link to the very first shot I took when we arrived, I lucked out it turned out to be my best one from there I think.
You can see that the sun is on its way up. In this shot I caught it in transition from shadow to sunlight. Giving it a kinda glowish look. I think in the mid summer if you hit if first thing in the morning you can get the dawn light on it. The time of year I was there, begining of Nov, this was not and option because the sun was rising so far south.

Jeremy, the shot you've linked to above is an absolutely killer shot. This one doesn't keep enough attention of the subject for me. The weeds, rocks, and hard-lit foreground combined with the shadowed background really distract from the subject. The glow you were trying to capture is certainly worthy of the attempt though. Nothing really wrong with this shot but, when compared to your other one....

I love that first shot you posted. This one is less than so-so

Its a good comp. I like the idea of getting the highlighted back edge of the Hoodoo to show up as its starting to do. Maybe taking the shot a minute or two later would have made that a bit more pronounced.

Tough crowd. I like it, but I'll work on it some more or see if I have another comp that may work. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

Having personally been right where you stood, I know how quickly the light overcomes the wall - I do like how you captured this with the very first available light... I should rework mine in CS3 and repost it..
