Beartooth Storm Storyboard
Beartooth Storm Storyboard

Taking some liberties with the bandwidth, but… we haven’t seen the dramatic storms that have passed over the Pueblo and Colorado Springs area, so I thought I’d post a series from a cool storm that put on a show for us up on the Beartooth plateau. This was our first night of the Canada trip and although our first sunset spot didn’t pan out, once we got up to the pass where we were going to spend the night, things got interesting.

All of these were shot with an Olympus C-8080, handheld. Should’ve set up the D2X, but at first it didn’t look like much would happen, and then once things started happening, I didn’t want to run back to the truck, so I stuck with the C-8080.

Image 1: 8:02 pm - looking west over the plateau towards the Beartooth-Absaroka wilderness. Looks like a normal evening storm.

Image 2: 8:59 pm – looking southeast as things start to get a little interesting.

Image 3: 9:03 pm – turning around, looking west.

Image 4: 9:04 pm – looking southeast again. It was hard to know which way to shoot, and those clouds were creating some really funky light.

Image 5: 9:05 pm – going vertical.

Image 6: 9:08 pm – now we’re all shooting away and ooooohing and aaaahhing like we’re at a fireworks show.

Image 7: 9:12 pm – one last shot, looking south as the light fades.

Image 8: 5:53 am – the storm kindly left some clouds behind for sunrise the next morning.

Wow, I thought #5 was gorgeous until I saw #6. That's just some ridiculous light.

A couple of those should be titled "The Fire Within." That's an incredible series of shots, Rick! I also like #5 and #6.

What an incredible variety of shots in 15 minutes. I really dig #5. #7's cool too... those blue clouds look like cotton candy.

Really nice shots, Rick! I like 5 and 6 the best - I am a sucker for verticals. The light is amazing.

The 8080 is well up to the task in this kind of situation!

Simply amazing. I'll throw in my vote for #5, I like #6 for the color in the cloud, but I think the clouds themselves are more interesting in 5. #7 ain't too shabby either!. Things sure can happen fast when Mother Naure decides to rock and roll!
