Fall Colors Question

Hello PNW'ers,

I was curious what types of fall colors you guys see out there? From previous posts and your fall colors outing for this year it sounds like you head for the Mtns.

Here in Colorado we see huge Aspen groves turn color in places like Crested Butte and the San Juans. This a pretty awesome sight. We do not really see maple trees or other hard woods that one might find on the East Coast.

Do you guys see many Aspens? Is there a primary tree that is most prevalent to see turning color? Or is it more of a combination of various types of smaller groves depending upon where you go?

Thanks,

- Derek

Vine Maple is IMHO the best Fall color display out here. We don't have the huge Aspen groves that you do, nor the Sugar Maple-like displays of New England. But the VM is really cool, and is my personal favorite camera target.

The VM runs the entire color gamut. yellow, orange, red, and sometimes all on the same tree.

Thanks Curtis,

I googled Vine Maple and the colors look great.

Just curious if you know of anyone's gallery with PNW fall colors? It would be great to see some landscapes with them.

Thanks,

Derek

Derek,

I'm not a fellow PNW, but I can provide some additional information. Washington actually has great fall color, though more subtle than in NE or Colo. The berry bushes found in the mountain landscapes provide great color (e.g. Stevens Canyon or Mazama Ridge in Mt. Rainier and the area around Mt. Baker) as do the larch trees (e.g. the area around Harts Pass off highway 20). The peak for both is late Sept/early Oct, depending on the location. For a site with good tips for fall color locations in the PNW, go to www.sunnywalter.com/WhereView-WNW-FallColorLinks.html. For a site with beautiful photos of Washington in the fall, try www.adamgibbs.ca.

I think most of the PNWNP members have fall color in our galleries. Scott is correct about the berry bushes, though they don't quite do it for me most of the time. Ah yes, and the Larch trees. The Northern Idaho, where my wife and I will spending a week in October, also has a good Larch presence.
