The sun comes up every morning; so I guess it's no big deal. Maybe taking a sunrise picture is even a cliche, but if I ever stop enjoying being there to see and photograph a sight like this one, it's time to shoot me because I've become too high-toned for my own good.
I'll let Tim Ernst have the pleasure of telling you where this was taken, if he wants to, since the location is his discovery. I'll give you this hint, though: he's already told the world where it is, the same way he told me, which is in one of his picture books.

This is another one with wonderful tones and a mystical feeling to boot! Really well done Randy .... and I'll guess Dodge City, KS!

Flatside Pinnacle, maybe? Wherever it was, it must have been quite a sight to behold! Beautiful light, Randy.

For anyone who might be curious, it's the kind of light you get when you wait for the sun to get high enough to get out of the frame, and then you underexpose to boost saturation. Of course it helps if you've got fog swirling around everywhere very kindly taking on the color of the light.
Flatside Pinnacle is a little closer than Dodge City, but again not quite there. Here's a shot taken a little later and a little wider, which may shed more light on the subject, so to speak:
My bad pun was about the fact this view is right next to that church - if this is the location on Firetower Road that I have shot before. I always worry about trespassing but sometimes for this shot it is so much better if you just step off of the road and onto the property of this new-fangled country church - I figure they would not complain about capturing the glory of God, although I remain a little sheepish about it and normally do stay on the road. Firetower Road is the one directly across the highway from the Center Point Trailhead on Hwy. 43 - it turns to gravel and comes out on Hwy. 74 near Azalea Falls Lodge. Is that the place?

If I had figured out that that place was a church I would have parked there instead of beside the road, and maybe I wouldn't have ruined a tire. The sign said Jesus something and I just didn't catch on.
Anyway, it's a great discovery and a wonderful view. There are a few other places along in there that look interesting as well.
I found that location in the spring of 2005 while out frantically driving around trying to find a spot for a sunrise that was about to happen. There are several interesting things along that stretch of road, but everything is private so it is road-only shooting. One section drains down into the place that Neil Compton made famous - "The Pen" - and we came within an hour of buying that property last year - someone beat us to it by that much! The realtor told us that he put the for sale sign up that morning and by the time I got back to his office he had already sold it.

Good guess, but sadly, no.

Was it Fire Tower Road? That sounds vaguely familiar. That sounds very close. Is there anyone who can help me out?
