I know how to use the crop tool to make a box of any size, but is there some way to have a fixed aspect ratio box? Kinda like resizing and keeping the ratio but being able to crop instead.
Hi Kevin, Well, I don't have version 6, but in version 10 when you select the Rectangular Marquee Tool, in the toolbar across the top you will see an item called Style. Here you can choose and specify a fixed aspect ratio. The small arrows in the center also change that aspect ratio from either vertical or horizontal.
How does the Marquee tool let me crop? Basically what I would like to do is crop a subject on the photo but keep the same aspect ratio as the original.

I have no idea if it's the same, but in Photoshop Elements, when the crop tool is selected, across the top there are some fields and a drop down menu. The drop down lets you specify certain common aspect ratios (8x10, 5x7, etc), as well as "same as current" and "no restriction". The two fields to the right let you specify a height and width.
If you pick "same as current" it will do what you want, or pick "no restriction" and put whatever you want in the other fields.
Using PS6 in the crop tool you can input sizes for H & W. There should be boxes above your photo to do this. You may use that to keep the aspect ratio you want.
You can use crop tool and set the ratio you want. You can even create action for the same. I suggest getting a good book on Photoshop. You may want to have a look at the classifieds section.
I just checked our copy of Photoshop 6.0 and the crop tool is set for an aspect ration of 3:2 which is the same as 35mm film. But, unlike later versions of Photoshop, including our 7.0, the aspect ratio cannot be changed. At least, I do not see an easy way to select another ratio.
It sounds like you may be using the "Rectangular Marquee Tool". If so, you can also select the "Crop Tool" with its solid dark borders which is the second tool beneath the marquee tool with its dashed border. It is the 3rd tool down in the left column of tools. You can change the size of the crop by dragging a corner. Also, you can manually rotate the crop.
As mentioned above, you can use the "Rectangular Marquee Tool" with its style set to "Fixed Aspect Ratio" in Photoshop 6.0. Either way, you can make an exact crop. I did not know about the style option for the "Rectangular Marquee Tool" until reading the above reply from Charlie. Thanks.
