Where to go in Europe for wildlife?

Good Day All,

I'm leaving for Croatia then Italy in a few days time and I'm interested to know of any birding of other wildlife spots that might present some decent viewing/photography.
I've spent a few summers studying the spotted owl here in the US, so I have a special interest in owls and other raptors. Are there any countries that might funnel birds for the autumn migration? I was told Turkey.

I have 4 months and my plans are entirely open ended. I was looking at the map the other day and N. Africa from Morocco to Egypt looked like an adventure.

The short of it is, I'm asking for advice on any "must see" wildlife or landscape photography spots in the area of Europe.

Thank you all for your time,
