Ocotillo Cactus Forest
My favorite desert plant! The Ocotillo cactus. Hit the bloom just right in late April near Tuscon. But they are specialized and inhabit only very certain areas with the right elevation. This was shot in the late afternoon (breezy conditions) after patrolling for good specimens for a couple hours. There was a FOREST of them on both sides of the road. There were so many, it was a bit difficult to compose a shot.

D200, 24-120/3.5-5.6G VR, tripod; f10, 1/320s, ISO 200.
Converted in ACR; processed in CS3: cloned in blossoms consistent with existing growth.

What do think?

I'm surprised to be saying this, but I think the late afternoon haze is working for you here by separating the cactus from its background. Looks like your search for the right specimen paid off. By the look of the other plants in the background, this was probably a difficult photo to simplify, but you did it.

BTW Interesting looking cactus...It looks kind of like Gorge forest undergrowth.

I love the red "things?" on the ends of the branches (do cacti have branches?)

Yes, Mike, I was kinda glad for the haze for the reason you mentioned. And oddly enough, it reminds me of an aquarium plant that has a similar habit.

Sean, the red things at the end of the branches are the flowers of the cactus. Very showy when in full bloom, yes? Love 'em!

I first became acquainted with this plant in the desert over by Wickenburg, AZ. They have beautiful ancient Saguaro in that area as well.

Thanks for the comments, guys.
