Top Five Sunset of All Time!
That's what I experienced last night. I watched the sun slowly head towards the edge of a massive cloud deck until it finally poked underneath, sandwiched between the clouds and the horizon, just as a steady rain began to fall, and with sunset a mere 15 or less minutes away. I worked to keep raindrops off my front element as I shot an amazing double rainbow. You can just make out the second rainbow in the lower left corner.

As the sun dipped lower and cast its light through the sheets of rain I was now sandwiched between, the whole landscape took on a fiery glow. (You can see the other end of the rainbow as it takes on the colors of sunset in my post on the ESS critique forum.) Everything around me turned orange, aided, no doubt, by the curtains of rain between me and the sun as it neared the horizon. I kpet the whiote balance set on "daylight" for this shot so that Average White Band -- er, I mean, Automatic White Balance -- wouldn't negate the incredible light show I was experiencing.

Wow Todd!!! Simply incredible. I'm sure glad you didn't put any copyright notice on your photos. They will look amazing in my portfolio.

Great stuff Todd. It's nice to see the "rest of the story". With digital, will you be able to pull out the clouds in the first shot here? The second one is absolutely killer.

Gorgeous enveloping glow, definitely the right place at the right time :toast:

Great catch! I like the post on ESS too. It pays to brave the elements!

Nice stuff but where's the rest of them???????????????????????

The rainbow has immediate eye-candy impact, but that second one is just simply and totally sublime. The slice of light cutting across the grasses is subtle, but add so much to the foreground scene. Awesome!

Excellent. The rainbow shot is very nice but the second shot is fantastic. Love the overall color, and staring of the sun through the trees. Great job.

Yeah, that second shot rocks! Question: is there any difference between shooting with a daylight WB setting vs just changing the setting when processing the RAW?
Posted by Todd Caudle on September 1, 2007 at 11:13 AM
Stan: Nope. But it gives me a more accurate representation on the LCD when I'm in the field.

Hey,

The rainbow is killer, but I really love the 2nd red sky shot with the sun star. One of your finest.
