Weak colours in prints

I have been struggling to get good results from my new Epson R1800 printer for a few months now. It's a serious printer and I have had learn a lot about colour space and the complex possibilities for changing image output in the driver.
I have now reached a point where I can get good quality prints from PhotoShop7 but I have to increase the master saturation of the image by about +30 to get it anywhere near to a reasonable colour in print.
The same images printed on my very old Epson 895 come out fine without the need to change any settings
Any suggestions as to why this may be?
Thanks

(I use an iMac intel 20" running OS 10.4.10)

What are your printer settings? There are a whole bunch of dumb little things to overlook when setting up a new printer that it is easy to miss something.

Some things that immediately come to mind to check:

Monitor profile. That hasn't changed, has it?

Paper/printer profile. I occasionally have use the 1280 paper profiles with the 4000. The results are not pretty. Also, have you recently switched papers? Are you using a glossy profile with a matte profile.

Do you still have the 985 running? If so, take an image and print it today with both printers. How does the exact same print look there? You'll at least be able to determine if the problem printer related or system related. I am not asking here what the prints looked like 6 months ago. I am trying to narrow down the problem to either the printer(s) or CS settings.

By the way, as you do this, make notes as to what changes you made when you switch printers. List them and tell us what those changes are. There may be some little step you are overlooking that causes your saturation issue.
