Don't know if this is of any use to you but I have Manfrotto 501 head and long plate. Used only a couple of time and less than three months old. Cost just over a £100. Will settle for half plus carriage. If you're interested send me an email.

Andy - I know what you are talking about - the gimbal.
I used one for ages - I thought I could do without a fancy head once - it's okay for tilting but panning is a bit of a hit and miss affair.
The other thing is it's not that sturdy and some slower shutter speeds can catch mirror slap vibes if your left hand isn't doing what it should - I cured that with a 2lb sandbag laid accross the lens between the gimbal sides.
You can't lock it for carrying the rig on your shoulder, and the side tensioners come loose all the time - if you tighten them a gnats too much you split the plastic thrust washers on the arm pivot points too.
Save your dough Andy (sell more 10x8 reorders on the happy couples!!) and get a Wimberley - there's just no comparison and it's the best investment you could make matey
