Big Horn 2
Early yesterday i went back to the Jura mountains to see if i could find the large Ibex i photographed the day before, It was cold up there and the cloud kept coming down causing a fog and lack of light, I spooked 3 groups of chamois and so headed back to the car, about 5 mins from the car it poured down so i took cover under some trees,it was near the track where i followed tracks before so decided to have another look, a couple of minutes later the young ibex came out of a bush followed by the big guy, they took cover under some trees and bushes, I then realised that there were 3 ibex there-2 large guys and the young one, I sat down to watch and after about 15 minutes one came over my way and laid down, I looked at the distance marker on the lens and it was just short of 30 feet, I stayed with these guys for 3 hrs, The weather as said was naff and i had to go to ISO 1600 just to get 1/25@F2.8, I cant believe the quality and lack of grain/noise, I have never used anything over ISO 800 before

Stunning animals. Sounds like the conditions where pretty naff though. Nice shot considering.

That's another wonderful shot :toast: Sound's like a great experience being so close for so long. Maybe he's related to Andrew Shepherd's Grouse

Stunning high iso performance Dave - and what an impressive beastie to boot :toast: :toast:

Have you subbed any 1DIII high iso shots to OSF yet - if so what was the reception like?

Regards

Andy

Dave,

That is fantastic, I would really like to see the original file, not one reduced for web reproduction, this is the first image from a 1D3 that has got me interested, never mind AF probs, its the high ISO performance I'm now getting interested in....

A fine result despite the less than ideal conditions, enjoyed reading about the story behind the image too.

What a great mammal to have in your sights.... impressive ISO as mentioned and well shot in the conditions Dave. I like the surroundings you've captured :toast:

Now you are talking, Dave ! It's a super photo. Only thing that looks odd to me is that it was taken in forest. Down here they are almost permanently above tree line. And file sure looks noiseless for such a high ISO.

Cheers,
Marko

Dave - I'm with PhilH 100% here, if you could send me a copy of the raw I'd be most grateful too :wavey: :wavey: :wavey: :wavey: :wavey:

Marko-The Jura mountains here are 1500m max so there are trees on top and you can drive most of the way which is why i favour them The alps on the other hand requires a 3 hrs hike minimum to get anywhere near them and its bloody hard work so i have only been there a few times,Ibex tend to live around 2800m and above the tree line, unless they can fly a helicopter they are stuck at 1500m
Andy i sent Phil the RAW file last night but will send you one later today no problems

Ohhh Dave - I just gotta get me one of these MkIII's :toast: :toast:

The iso noise on that Raw file is equal to D2Xs at sub 400 I'd guess - crikey that's mighty usefull!!

Only problem is I'd have to buy a 600 f4 too and even then I'd be down on subject image size against my D2Xs + SigDog.

Ah well, we can but dream

Thanks again Dave :toast:
