I will be spending several days on the north rim and would appreciate any comments or suggestions. I will be driving a mid sized SUV (Nissan Miran, AWD with medium clearance) and hope to get out to some of the outlying parts of the rim. We will be there during the third week of this month. Again any ideas ands or suggestions would be appreciated.

I'll be there September 15-17 in a silver Jeep Rubicon with a hard top on 33" tires. I'm taking the jeep (instead of our outback) for other parts of the trip, not for the Grand Canyon area. I've read about the roads to Toroweep and it doesn't sound like you will have any issues reaching that area. The Page area is another option for the Horseshoe bend and Antelope Canyon.
Aside from Toroweep and Page, I haven't seen anything that sounded like a can't miss place that you could access by normal vehicle off the beaten path. Point Imperial, Cape Royal and the area around the North Rim Lodge appear to be the best locations for photography. I'm looking at hiking Francis Mather Point for sunset, but it looks to be about a 10 mile hike RT and we'd have to do the return leg in the dark, so I'm not sure about it yet. You could photograph Cape Royal and the Wotan's throne together from this point, but I'm not sure that it would be an improvement on shooting Wotan's Throne from Cape Royal.
You might find some interesting options in the Escalante area. Paria, Buckskin Gulch, Bullfrog-Notom road to the Bullfrog Marina. But it can be alot of driving to get from point to point in this
