Hey everyone, I just did an update on my website and added my newest Colorado photos and a few from the SW. Most of my Colorado stuff is on the "New Additions" page1 and a few on page4, and the Colorado shots from earlier are on "Gallery" page1. Here are two links:

Some are from well known locations and others are a bit less familiar, but I would appreciate hearing which shots you like. Also I think I'm man enough to handle it, so tell me if there is a shot that just doesn't work for you. I'm serious, sometimes negative feedback is more constructive!!! Thanks.

Can't find anything I don't like!
"Cloud Eruption" and the American Basin shots are great!
Good work!

They all work for me, but the Roan Sunset is fabulous.
Fantastic collection!

Wow - really sensational! I love the color and the depth in the stream shots.

John, I can only see one thing wrong with all those---- that it took you so darn long to get these on your site!!

Awesome stuff John, as usual! Like Todd said, "Storming the Castles" rocks!

Wow, John, fantastic work, I'll say what someone else said - I like everything there!

Brent, I hear you!!! My big problem is that I have been waiting until they are drum scanned so I only have to work up the shots once. But stay tuned, because I have a bunch more that are scanned and will be posted soon!!!

Damn John, you've been a busy man! I would hate to be tasked with picking a favorite among those photos because they are all truly spectacular. Can't wait to see more!

John - they are all sweet images - nothing negative to say here.

Your "Stream of Life" shot, is that Raven Fork? When I lived in Atlanta, I used to head to GSM NP quite a lot.

Nice Job! :toast:

Great stuff, John. All winners to me. If you don't like 'em, I'll take 'em ;-)

Amazing images John!

With all of these fantastic galleries/photos being posted lately I feel like an insignificant hack!
Of course it would help if I got out and actually took some photos.
That job thing really gets in the way.

John, here's my impressions:

Storming the Castles and Roan Sunset are awesome. Terrific weather, color and compositions in these. The Evans shots are also really nice with some dramatic clouds and light in both of those.

I'm not too crazy about Silver Steam as it seems very cluttered, it's hard to even make out the stream as it disappears in to everything else too easily. It also has weird highlights and shadows in it. Did you do something new in post on this? Gem Dunes is also one that seems really average compared to your other images. Nothing to interesting going on in that one with bright flat light, perhaps at another time of day to get some interesting shadows going on?

In any case, these are a great group of images you just put up. Congrats

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Craig, I agree about "Gem Covered Dunes" - its a nice scene but not incredibly dynamic. The funny highlights and shadows you mentioned in "Silver Stream" is mostly because of lots of lichen on the rocks and tree trunks. That shot is busy and doesn't show up well on the web, but at 20x30 it looks pretty nice and it easier to appreciate the rhodie thickets vs. the forest trees and leaves.

Rene, I shot "Stream of Life" over on the Middle Prong just off the road somewhere. I have driven along Raven Fork, but is there a trail along the stream beginning at Big Cove? That area looks pretty rugged, but I'd be curious about good trails or interesting spots in the area.

John, I don’t know about any trails along the stream there. I just know the stream from shooting along Big Cove Road.

For some excellent shooting outside the park, go south on US 411 out of the park and hit US 64 going east. You will see some amazing scenery along this road – waterfalls, streams, small towns, and scenic views. Follow US 64 all the way into Brevard, NC, the hit US 276 north to the Blue Ridge Parkway. You follow along the Davison River and Looking Glass Creek. This section of road is my absolute favorite place in NC. There are tons of places to explore. Once on the Blue Ridge Parkway you can head back to the park, going west.

Really, really like your gallery! The Castles is magnificent, was that from last year? Your photos from NC are beautiful too and make me want to brave the crowds of people and the traffic and try to visit it some day.
Posted by John Zinn on September 14, 2007 at 12:55 PM
Don, when I was there last year everything was cloudy, gray and snowing. My trip ended before thing really cleared up. This was from Fall '05. You should visit NC for sure. I went late in the Fall and it was cloudy and rainy which was perfect for waterfalls and meant NO PEOPLE!!!! The Smokies are also great in the spring with no too bad crowds and in the summer if you get off the beaten path like Rene suggests above, you will see people but not large crowds.

I remember a lot of these images. Very, very nice stuff. Yeah, that Castles shot is to die for. I'm officially ready for fall now.

Phenomenal collection, John. Spruce Flats Fall is my kind of image - it feels big, but intimate. Clearing Autumn Storm and Fairyland Sunrise are both over the top gorgeous. The American Basin shots don't do much for me - they're solid images, but I'm not as nearly engaged with those scenes as I am with the Dolly Sods shot, which is remarkable.
Posted by John Zinn on September 23, 2007 at 4:38 PM
Thanks for the feedback Jesse and Rick. That day at Dolly Sods was pure "Todd Caudle" weather. The clouds were in the valley and blew up after sunrise. Have fun this fall!!
