Canon ID Mk III image
Just back from photographing White-tailed Eagle (will post a few later)- unfortunately only one sunny day with high winds so the boat was rocking all the time.

The attached image of an immature Herring Gull was taken with the 1D MkIII with a 300mm f2.8 IS attached at 650 iso using the centre focusing point and the surrounding assist points. Using this I found that if (as was often the case in a rocking boat) the focusing point went off the subject it would not hunt off into the BG but quickly found the subject again - which is not the case if you use the so called 'ring of fire' I also set the camera to 6 frames a second as I am beginning to wonder if at 10 frames a second it's ability to track a moving subject is not as consistent as it is at a lower frame rate. In very very demanding conditions I feel it tracked the subjects quite well with many sharp images.

The following image is full frame and processed in CS3 and the repost crop is at 100%

David, very nice image, particularly the 100% crop. I cannot get ring of fire working either, never shot like that with any Nikon or Canon camera, I've always relied on myself nailing the focus point on the subject. I'm not even sure about turning the assist point on which I do. I may try and turn them of to see what happens. What do you have C.Fn III-2 set to?

Cheers

Hi Nick

Either the default in the middle or one bar towards the slow setting - I think it was on the middle when I took this image!

Great capture David and i like the information you have given. That is a very interesting your comment on the focusing at 6 frames a sec. I wonder if any other owners of the Mark111 on this Forum have experienced this?

Another image that makes me want to buy one of these bodies :frown:

I think the image makes the bird look a tad ugly, but the clarity and detail is amazing David - looking forward to seeing the eagle :toast:

So Dave, does this mean all your earlier worries about Mk111 were in vain?
