Yesterday morning I hiked over to Haynach Lakes area of RMNP which I had never visited. It entailed an early start up Flattop Mountain which provided me with this view of Longs Peak with stars over the the top. Sunrise was less than I anticipated, but I still caught some nice clouds over the Estes valley http://morninglight.us/forum/07/0916.jpg. The light was less than spectacular for most of the morning, but the colors in the tundra were very nice. http://morninglight.us/forum/07/0917.jpg. The Haynach Lakes area was very beautiful though the light was well past prime and so I didn't really try to take many images. I think I'm going to have to find a way to spend some time in this part of the park next year. Here's a mid-day shot of one of the lakes. http://morninglight.us/forum/07/0918.jpg

Erik, lovely image, can you share your camera settings?? You caught the big planet in the East, think its Venus maybe? Orion's Belt too, cool.

Hi Bill. I'm on someone else's computer so I don't have the EXIF data in front of me, but I think I shot that image at ISO 1000, F4, 15 seconds.

This one and the first two links are among the best stuff you've ever posted, Erik! Absolutely amazing stuff!

Erik,

Great shot!!!

I have been waiting to get a 5D before trying more of the 'non-star trail' landscape images like yours above. My 10D is a little too noisey at higher ISOs for this sort of thing.

The first image I saw like this which really got me jazzed on the idea was done by Daniel Bayer. He did a 'gallaxy' shot very successfully with his 5D, 24L@1.4 and ISO 1600 for 30 secs over Independance Pass by moonlight:

Ever since seeing this shot I knew there was much more that could be done with the stars and landscapes at night/dawn/dusk.

It is nice to see you are really starting to push the envelope with your new camera.

Thanks for posting and keep up the great work,

- Derek

i like the color ration with just a hint of the blue "star" against the yellow sky, great complimentary colors

Erik, for some reason my first reply didn't take completely. Anyhow, I did the Tonahutu (spelling?) North Inlet loop back in 03 or 04 and it really is a beautiful area and one that I've never seen photographed, or at least I've not seen many images of the area. I spent one night at the Haynach campsite and the area was not only beautiful, but void of people.

I'd enjoy seeing some more images of the area. Should I make another trip to Colorado it is unlikely that I will ever hike the same route again. Actually, just publish a book on the area and I'll purchase one

By the way nice images

I love it!!!!! This is the coolest image of Longs I've ever seen. I love the way the atmosphere "disappears". Is the orange glow from city lights?

The Estes clouds shot is awesome too. Wow what a morning for photos!!!

Oh yeah, this image of Longs is KILLER. Wow.

Don't see to many images of the Haynach area. Very cool! You seriously might be running out of RMNP destination by now!??
