I was getting images ready for a website update (soon I hope) and I came across this image from last year.
This is the pond at Hale Church ( minus the church of course). If I remember right this was one of my workshop weekends and I think
Chuck B. & Bob Kulon might have been there this moning as well. (?)
Anyhow, as you can see, the water was dead calm & the sun was casting some really warm light on the hillside.
For effect ,I really over saturated ( purposely some over saturation)the color, and over sharpened the image. I would really ( for my tastes) call this "photo art", but its fun to play around with sometimes.
I hope that you all get he color as good this fall. I'll be in Ohio from Oct16-the 23rd (workshop + 1-2 days of shooting) so I am hoping for the best too.
Regards,
Jack

Hi Jack,
I was wondering where that barn is located-I live near Cincinnati. I was out this morning looking for color. A few leaves were turning.

Actually, it is an equipment garage. Next to the church at Hale Farm, near the east half entrance. Those little white things in the front of the building are porta-potties.I think I was there the same time Jack shot this. Here's what I saw -

Bob,
As you know, I usually assign nicknames for a lot of my friends, Like "The Amazing" etc.... I now have one for you.. "Rembrandt"... meant is a very complimentary way!

Too funny!!! But - like I've been harping - shadow and highlight detail are huge goals to pursue. The digital realm and careful planning allow one to bring out this richness. That was the one thing that inspired me to create the DSLR Boot Camps. I felt like people could benefit from this sort of insight to exploit the tools we have been given. This is a great time to be a photographer.

It certainly is---its the "industrial revolution" of photography.

Jack,
I don't remember being with you guys that morning, but my shot looks like I must have stood in exactly the same place as you. Our two images make a nice panorama. This was from Nov 1, 2006. It had been very foggy earlier that morning. Good news! They've added a second port-a-potty behind that building. As you can see, I cloned it out of my shot.
Mike, this pond and barn and church are part of historic Hale Farm and Village located in the Cuyahoga Valley NP. From Cincinnatti, take I-71 to I-271 to the exit for Brecksville Road & Hwy 176. At the intersection go straight and continue straight into the valley. It gets a bit complicated from there, so email me if you want detailed directions. Or attend Jack's workshop later this month. Hale Farm will no doubt be on the agenda.
I was in southern Ontario last weekend and there are places in the Niagara Peninsula that look like they are in full fall. Further north, not so much. You can see the green in the maples starting to be replaced by yellow here, with a few early ones going red already. Dogwoods are going, too. Won't be long!

Mike, a litle bit of clarification from where they are shooting from. Once you actually get to the main entrance of Hale Farm, you'll notice that the church doesn't look like this and the pond won't be visible.
What you will want to do is either park near the entrance, if it is closed, or continue south maybe 500 yards around the bend in the road. This is the opposite direction of the cemetary. There are a couple of driveways that are actually on park service land (at least that is my understanding), including one at the far end of the pond from where you just where. That will give you these angles, or you can walk up the road towards where you just came from and dive about 10 feet through the brush to get this shot
Part of the problem with this church is that if there are leaves on the trees, you'll drive right past it unless you know where it is.
Fall this year in Ohio should be interesting to see what happens. Central Ohio is about 6 inches under for rainfall for the summer, so I am expecting poor color and things going fast. I might have to go north to Cuyahoga to do some shooting, assuming that rainfall has been better up there. Southern Ohio I expect to be a bust, as the area has be at or near drought conditions for the summer. We'll have to see what happens.

I haven`t photographed this area yet so maybe this will be the year!

Yes, like Dan said, don't use the main gate...

Dan, We've had a dry summer as well. We did get hammered with rain in late August, but don't know if it was enough to save the fall. If it looks good, we'll be sure to let you know.

Dan, thanks for posting the detailed directions to this church! You are right: I certainly would never have found it on my own.
Not much color yet, and lots of fog, but I think it's passable....
