Are there any swampy areas in Ohio that would be good for fall color? I have seen swampy areas around Killbuck in Amish country but what about other areas as well?

Mike, Not sure what exactly you're looking for when you say "swampy." There are a couple of nice kettle bogs east of Akron, near Kent. Triangle Pond Bog is the more picturesque of the two. The tamaracks there turn gold in late October/early November (see posts from 11/04/06 in this forum to see shots from there). There are numerous ponds and wetland areas in the CVNP -- we get great fall color here. Hope that helps.

Looks interesting. Do the tamaracks turn later than the usual fall colors? When the tamaracks are peak the other colors are past peak? Shouldn`t the peak colors be about mid October?

Mike, The tamaracks peak a bit later than the hardwoods. The shot above was from early November and they were just past peak. Hardwood color peak runs from mid to late October here. Peak color varies depending on a lot of climatic factors that remain a mystery to me.

I don't think that Tamarack roots are very deep into the soil(ground) , therefore they are at the mercy of quick changes. I photographed these in Illinois as well and they are perhaps the most unpredictable tree that changes color ( they are the only pine that drops its spines).

I discussed the change with a PhD Botanist that visits the bogs daily. He claims that the Tamaracks go at some point during the first 2 weeks of November, always 2 weeks after the peak deciduous color drop. The maximum tamarack show lasts for only about 3 days.

Hope that helps.

So,if I were to plan a trip to Triangle Pond what other areas should I visit? How far is Cuyahoga Valley Park?

CVNP would be about 20 miles west of Triangle Bog. But, if you go the first week of November for the golden tamaracks at the bog, the show in CVNP (Fall color) will already be over.
