Hey y'all,

I'm proud to announce that Dave Showalter's incredible first book will be hitting shore any day now. It's called Prairie Thunder, and is the culmination of Dave's diligent work for the past several years in documenting the beauty of Colorado's plains. You can see our Web site dedicated to the book here:
http://www.prairie-thunder.com

He's slated for a presentation and book signing in November, and I'd love to see as many fellow forum denizens there as possible, and maybe a bunch of us can get together for a meal before the show, too. As it gets closer, I'll post again.

Congratulations, Dave! That pano of the autumn cottonwoods in the "samples" section is out of this friggin' world fantastic. Wish I could make it to the book signing but I'm a bit too far away for a day trip.

Best of luck with the book! :toast:

Looks great, Dave! I've thought about doing more flatland shooting as a personal project and challenge. Now I'll have some inspiration. If I'm not out of town or chained to my desk, I'll see you at the book signing.

Todd - A meal before the show? Would that be Fat Tire, or PBR? :toast:

Congrats! As someone who lives on the plains, the cover shot is awe inspiring.

Sweet!! Congrats on the book - the previews really look great! A great showcase for a landscape that doesn't get the attention it deserves due to those dang mountains!!!

Looks like a wonderful book on a great subject, Dave. I've read the delightful book "Grasslands" by Richard Manning, and his endorsement and introduction are a great compliment to what looks like a must have photo book. Congratulations!

Rich: Sadly, I don't drink. Nothing against it, I just never acquired a taste for alcohol of any kind. I say sadly because there have been many times I've been somewhere, like Old Chicago, and looked at a beer menu, and all those international and regional beers sound so good! Pale Ale? Dark Lager? Amber? Man, they just sound like something tasty. Alas, those words mean nothing to my taste buds.

'Nothing against it, I just never acquired a taste for alcohol of any kind'

Well, see Todd that's where you went wrong--you don't acquire a taste for alcohol; it acquires a taste for you
(and i have no idea what i just said, hic)

Congrats Dave!! Will have to check it out.

Congratulations Dave! Looks like an awesome piece of work and uniquely different subject matter. I have been thinking of a trip to Pinyon Canyon due to the contoversy.
John :toast:

How about San Andreas "Earthquake Pale" - It's shaken not stirred!"

Congrats on the book. Hopefully I can make it to the Nov event you have for the book. David Middleton mentioned it was coming out when I discussed some items in Colorado with him last month.

Cheers,
Neil.

Congratulations Dave on a true work of art. As a lifelong resident I can certainly appreciate the subject matter, and the inspiration it took to create it. A wonderful idea and a great book. :toast:

Yessssssssssss!!!!!! They say you can't tell a book by its cover, but in this case I believe the naysayers are wrong. Congratulations! :toast:

Thanks for the kind words folks. It's been a long journey to get to this point and it took awhile for the conservation aspect to come together. The writing was painful, and I was relieved to learn that it doesn't come easily for Richard Manning either. I can't say enough about Todd's support and creative vision to make my work look so good in print. His whacky sense of humor helped to keep me from taking the whole thing way too seriously. I was a student of David Middleton's at Rocky Mountain School of Photography when the idea turned into a project, and David was a great mentor for a long time after I completed his pro nature class. Along the way, I've learned to believe in my work, trust instinct (while listening to experts and changing course often) and to dream big. This (RMNP) is an amazingly talented group and I hope that many of you will develop your projects and find a way to make a difference with your outstanding imagery. Dream Big!
I hope to see you at the Tattered Cover (or before at a dive TBD)
Erik: We'll trade books!
Bret: I'll come over to Utah and we can have a milk shake!

Apologies for hijacking the thread, Dave....

Todd, if you've never bought beer and gave up buying film, shouldn't you be retired by now?

Rich, I still have all this dough tied up in photo gear, so unfortunately I feel obligated to keep going out and using it. You should hear me grumble as I prep for a trip. "Crap, I've gotta go see beautiful places at opportune times, sleep in the cool mountain air and take pretty pictures when I'd rather be sitting in a cubicle in front of a computer monitor, sneaking eBay, met-art and TMZ page views with an overbearing boss just around that corner."

Dave - congratulations, my friend!! That's fantastic! What an accomplishment - it's great to see a book highlighting the ecological importance and beauty of the grasslands and prairie. The images on the website are superb - looking forward to seeing the book!
