I use 2 500GB external hard drives to store my images, 1 is a mirror of the other. During the last couple of days, Windows XP is occasionally telling me it doesn't recognize one of them and when it does recognize it, tells me it is plugged into a 1.1 USB port and that it could run faster if plugged into a 2.0 USB port. The problem is I don't have any 1.1 ports on my computer, all 8 ports are 2.0 USB.
Is this a sign to replace the harddrive with a new one? Or is it just a connection issue? It is a Western Digital MyBook Premium Edition. Is the hard drive's preinstalled software corrupted, giving out erroneous info to the computer?
Have you tried to plug the drive into another port? See if it still doing the same. If yes you may have to reformat the drive and reinstall the software. Do you have room on your internal drive to store your photos? You may have to reformat both if caused by a corrupt file, being that the drives are mirrored. It maybe just as simple as having a bad cable/connection. Good luck

Could be something as simple as the drive interface hardware in the portable drives. If the data is intact, then re-installing the drives in new enclosures (with new USB or Firewire interface hardware) might do the trick as well. As John suggested though, cables and connections are the weakest links, and you should determine if the problem is there before you escalate to new interfaces..
