Good morning.

Does anyone use any of the following Sigma lenes with a Cannon XTi:

- 80 - 400 f/4.5 - 5.6 EX DG APO OS.

- 135 - 400 f/4.5 - 5.6 APO DG.

- 50 - 500 f/4.5 - 6.3 EX DG HSM.

If so how do you like it?
If so due yo use a 1.4 converter?
If so how do you like it & will the AF work?

Thank you, I am trying to plan for a future purchase & I am trying to decide between Cannon or Sigma Lens.

Are you considering using the Sigma 1.4 converter or the Canon? The Canon will definitely report the 1.4, so you will be looking at f8 on the camera wide open and the Rebel will not autofocus.

I am not sure if the Sigma reports its presence to the camera, so you may still see f5.6 wide open, when it is really f8. If this is the case, the camera will try to focus but it is not going to be a fast combination and you'll miss a lot.

Regarding the TC & AF: I think you can tape off one of the pins to "hide" the TC and make the camera focus (or at least it will attempt to do so). I'm a Nikon user, so I can't say much about the Sigma/XTi combos, but I can certainly say that a slow lens and a TC on it is not something I'd want to use...

Don't know about Sigma on Canon. I have the Sigma 135-400. It is several years old and was used on my Nikon film cameras and it seemed to do OK. But when I got my Nikon D200 I can't use it at all. Most images seem so soft I can't use them. I understand the 50-500 EX is much sharper. Digital really shows how sharp a lens is. I also have a Sigma 180 EX Macro and it is a great lens. Very Sharp.

Rich, with any of the mentioned lenses you will get decent results. The 50-500 may be the best bet, but don't plan on using a teleconverter with any of them.

Without a doubt, the Sigma 100-300/f4 would be a better bet. A bit more $$, but keep you eye open on ebay. More info here and here.

Jim,

Good evening. Thanks for the info. I have the following lens
SIGMA ZOOM LENS 62 mm DG MACRO 28 – 300 1:3.5 – 6.3
SIGMA ZOOM LENS MODEL 520– 55 MM 100 – 300 mm 1:4.5 – 6.7 DL

I use the 28 - 300 all the time & it is a great lens. As a matter of fact I have a second one, brand new & still in the box. The 100 - 300 is from my Cannon Rebel 2000, but still use it with my XTi.
