I would go for the Nikon, myself. It has a very good VR system and is an excellent performer according to reviews.

Hi

I have not used the lens myself. But I'll feel free to make some comments nevertheless since I've researched the superzoom arena a bit before buying my travel lens. Maybe the photozone.de reviews are old news for you. If not, have a look here:

This is the Tamron:
http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/tamron_18250_3563_nikon/index.htm

Now compare the Tamron @ 250 to the 70-300 VR Nikkor @ 300:
http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/nikkor_70300_4556vr/index.htm
Amazing, isn't it? Sure, it doesn't have VR, and maybe the contrast is lower, but for a superzoom, the Tamron seems to be surprisingly decent all across the range.

This is the 18-200 DX VR:
http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/nikkor_18200_3556vr/index.htm
Maybe all-in all the superzoom to have (thanks to AF-S and VR)?

This is the 18-135 DX Nikkor:

I have this one, and it's great sharpness wise, and nice for travel, but probably too short for your needs.

Best regards

Basil

Yikes, I'm such an idiot - of course you use a Canon, not a Nikon. Sorry for the useless info...

Are you guys trying to tell me to sell my Canon 20D and get a Nikon????

But don't worry Basil there was a link to a review of the Canon version of the lens. Sounds like a decent lens....

Thanks for the info,
Frank

Hey,

I actually have this lens and use it as my walkabout lens. Never had any issues with it, and I use the macro quite a bit. Now that I have said that, I am looking to replace it with something faster, and just get another lens for macro, maybe the 100mm.

Hope this helps,

Emmett

Hi Emmett,

What would you replace it with? Are you interested in selling the Tamron?

thanks,
Frank

I'm all for selling Canons and buying Nikons, and would recommend that to everybody. But that's not the point here. I simply forgot that you're using a Canon, and not a Nikon.
