Hi All,

Though I'm originally from the San Diego area, I've been away in Maine and now New York for many years. I have two questions for you locals.

1. I want to head out to the Salton Sea this week. I've never been, but want to get as many decent wildlife images as quickly as possible - preferably of a variety of critters, not just birds. Any and all recommendations are much appreciated.

2. I only brought my 80-200mm 2.8 and an assortment of WA lenses with me. Does anyone know where I can rent a lens locally. I'm in Del Mar, but would be willing to pick up in SD or La Jolla.

Thanks so much!

Karsten

Karsten, I have not been to the Salton Sea in MANY years. I use to fish there a lot as a teen. Most of the bird shots I have seen come out of the south western side if the information posted is correct in each case. I think there is a refuge down there these days as a last resort to try and save the place. Here is a link to Calumet in SD, they might rent gear you are looking for. Good luck. http://www.calumetphoto.com/ctl?ac.ui.pn=compinfo.CompStoreLocDetail&ac.comp.locID=SD

I don't think you'll see much other wildlife other than birds. Not sure how many birds are there at this season, but in winter there are a heck of a lot. If you do see any other wildlife you might see the typical desert wildlife such as lizards, snakes, coyotes (or roadkill).

The towns in that southern area are kinda scary looking.
