A few more shots from the Grand Canyon
This is an automerge of 3 shots taken at Cardenas Creek at sunset. I upsized this shot to 16" X 56" using Genuine Fractals and the file size is 1.4 gig! There are a few more shots on my website:

Love your star photos - could you explain? Normally those types of shots are done with an equatorial mount - you didn't have one of those with you did ya? Otherwise I assume just a high ISO and fast lens?

What great memories you should have from this trip. A very nice gallery all around and I'll second Tim's comment, the night skies were especially nice. From the looks of it, I'll bet you used the vari-ND grad a lot on this trip. :wavey:

Tim, I only took my 30D with a canon 17-40 f4.0, 70-200 f4.0 and tripod due to weight and space limitations. Bottom line whatever I took with me, I would have to hike out with.

I used the 17-40 f4.0 wide open at 1600 ISO and experimented with time, realizing anything much longer than 30 seconds would produce star trails. I think these shots were exposed at about 34 seconds with noise reduction on. There is more noise than I get with my 5D but the stars were really incredible and the Milky Way was as brilliant as I ever seen.

I left your lense at home for safe keeping!

Really well done, Tom! :toast: I hope you'll have a few stories to share in October at RC.
