Derek and I have been mulling over some close to home locations this weekend and trying to get some input to best locations for s0ome scenic and possible leaf changes.
Choices are;
Wet Mountains East Slope
Spanish Peaks
Rampart Range
Or if there are similar locations near any of these please suggest.

I just saw Derek's e-mail to me, so let me respond to both of you here. I came through Hardscrabble Canyon this morning, and the trees that do change looked like they needed more time. The Wets is not a location I would rate highly for fall color potential.
The Cucharas Pass area in the Spanish Peaks, on the other hand, has great potential, although I suspect it's early. Haven't been down there yet. There's also the Huerfano River basin, which has great aspens.
As for Rampart Range, I suggest you peek out your window with some binoculars tomorrow morning. If the aspens on the east slopes of Pikes Peak and Camerons Cone are gold, you should find Rampart Range looking pretty good. Last time I saw them, they still looked green.

It would be also be interesting to check out the Spanish Peaks. I guess it is hard to tell how far along the aspens are without actually driving out there and checking it out.
Thanks again for those front range ideas.

Im somewhat biased, but i love the wets, i was just there today, and although there are no sweeping vistas and color is still a week away, there are loads of ops up there. I havent been to the Spanish area in Fall, will have to check it out.

Another thing i should mention is that it is going to be windy as heck all this weekend as a pretty good storm is gonna move right though Colorado. Expect 50+ mph winds in the passes and exposed ridges. The track still isnt totally clear, which will affect how much if any snow the mtns get, but the best bet will be in the ramparts, where it could snow down to 8K or lower sat night. The sangres should get some snow, just not sure how much. But count on windy! With snow, sunday should be awesome if a bit breezy still.

It's fairly green up on Rampart right now (checked it out this morning), near Woodland Park. There's plenty of color color towards Divide/west side of Pikes Peak. I would imagine it's quite nice towards Cripple Creek. Recent pics of the Buffalo Peaks area looked pretty good. Wilkerson/LaSale passes are probably really good right now.
