I'm looking at getting CS3 ( I currently have CS), but I'm wondering if my computer will handle it.
I've got the Athlon XP 3200, 2.2 GHz, with 2 MB ram. It handles CS fine, but I just read that CS3 needs Dual-Core or equivalent to run well.
Advice? Would I need to get a new computer just to run CS3?

Genny, my computer is fairly old (2 years). I do not have a dual core, and CS3 runs fine. I have a Pentium D 830 (3GHz), 3 GB RAM, and run Windows XP Pro. Not being a tech wizard, I don't know how mine compares to yours, but I haven't had any problems at all.

Thanks, Bill. My computer is 2-3 years old, too. Geez, I think you're the first person I heard of who ran CS3 on a non-dual-core machine. I'm glad to hear it can actually be done. I'm not a computer techie either, but I think yours is faster than mine.
Man, isn't it a sign of the times when 2 years old is "fairly old"? !!!

Genny,
I am another person running CS3 on a non-dual-core processor. According to my software, I am running on a Pentium(R) 4 3.00GHz processor with 1.00 GB of RAM. I am not sure of when I bought this machine, but I do know that it is more than 2 years old. CS3 runs fine and at least as fast as CS2. I know it would run faster on a newer machine as it does run faster on my laptop, which does have a dual-code processor.
It is time to get a new machine while Windows XP is still available!!

Fred,
Thanks for the input. You make a really good point about getting a new machine with WinXP, too. I don't have any desire to have to mess with Vista!!!!!!

Genny, Fred brings up an interesting point about his laptop. I also have a laptop with a dual core processor, 2GB RAM, and running Vista (I hate Vista!). CS3 runs MUCH slower on my laptop than my non-dual core desktop. I don't know the reason for this, whether it might be related to Vista or the difference in RAM size (2GB vs. 3GB), or what. In fact, most programs seem to run slower on my laptop than desktop.

I was looking through some computer advertisements this past weekend and noticed that some computers are being sold with Vista with a free downgrade to XP. I believe that the advertisement was for MicroCenter. This is an interesting new twist. I guess Vista is pretty much universally disliked by much of the computing public. Personally, I have not tried Vista. When I ran a check and found that none of my peripherals was supported,I gave up right there. I still haven't read an unpaid report on Vista that would make me want to buy it.
Fred and Bill,
Yes, Vista does seem to have some bugs. I was looking at the Adobe user forums, and the forums on dpreview. Sure seems like a lot of weird little problems with Vista and PS.
I am going to try PS3 on my computer, though.
