Herring Gull with fish
Shot into the sun from a small boat. My first reaction on screen was that I had over exposed the image but I soon realised that the shadow areas were perfectly exposed with other highlights blown. I am very pleased with the finished image even though many areas are blown. Interesting to hear other views.

I think its a beautiful image, plenty of impact and sunny seaside stmosphere. Feel the fish is somewhat unexpected a fat chip would be more the norm
Excellent, good to see the boundries being stretched.

David,
I think this is a cracking shot and certainly different from the "norm".
Even though it is tight in the frame and has many bright specular highlights I think this would look great as a large canvas print.

I love it as well again its not the norm. Well done.

Hi David

A beautiful high key shot, just enough colour in the fins and the gulls feet to draw you in,my kind of shot!

The 'blown' areas do not bother me at all and would probably be the same on a slide-difficult lighting handled well i would say, The fish looks like a roach so i guess you were in fresh water? :toast:

Hi David,
Always a pleasure to see something a little out of the ordinary, with this being no exception.
Love the dramatic action and high key effect.

Lovely bright overall feel to this shot David, and the exposure looks as it should for this situation IMO.

You appear to have a great sample of this particular camera {which must have been a relief}, as focus is spot-on.

Cracking shot :toast: :toast:

Great to see the boundries being pushed... the specular highlights (apart from one) don't cause me any problems and it looks like all the detail has been retained despite very difficult shooting conditions....

The one highlight that bothers me and draws my eye is the one just below the wing and just above the head, it draws my eye somewhat.

Is this from the WT Sea Eagle trip?

All the best

Hi Phil

Maybe removing the circular one above the head would improve the image a little but the other which is a continuation of the crest of the wave would be very difficult to remove or tone down without detracting from the image - IMO.

Yes from the W T Eagle trip we had to keep feeding the Gulls which in turn attracted the Eagles!

Hi David

I really like this. The high key, bright background look works really well and the subject is exposed perfectly. Excellent image, it is far more eyecatching than if you had shot it in 'ideal' lighting conditions.

cheers

Hello David

I really like this shot, it is refreshing to see something different from the more conventional shots. Was this positioned for or is your polish not that good

Hi Dave,

No, it is just the circular one, the others are not a problem.... and it is really so minor on such a superb image....

All the best

Hello David
I think we are becoming over saturated with excellent wildlife images on this site, because it is only images that stray away from the usual rules which seem to attract the most interest!
This certainly falls into the latter group and deserves the acclaim it is receiving, it is very eye catching and an excellent result. Well seen and very well taken.
Best wishes

Hi David,

I like the impressionistic feel to this, and has been stated it would look great on a good sized canvas on a large wall. Also proves it's not just the trophy species that can provide the best pics too - something we can all forget at times. :toast:
