Fall River Road

After a long week at work and with the lagging color in many of the hot spots out west in mind, I decided to shoot close to home this past weekend and save McClure/Kebler for next weekend. Hopefully, my gamble will pay off.

So, I took a leisurely drive up Fall River Road to St. Mary's, followed by a drive up CO 103 to Echo Lake. Lots of good color to be found along both routes, although Fall River Road is a little farther along, with plenty of orange (as the photo illustrates) and some spots of red. Very few sweeping vistas, really (I only touched my wide angle lens a few times), but plenty of intimate portrait opportunities. The overcast skies made for wonderful lighting in that respect, although the wind presented some trouble.

A few more shots from the day here.

Thanks for posting these, Jeff. I've never been up either of the mentioned roads in the fall and was surprised to see such great color there, I really liked that 1st shot on your website.

Jeff - thanks for the update and posting the shots. Great fall colors - my favorite is #1. :toast:

I am planning on heading up Co 103 this afternoon for a little bit of shooting.

Fall river road is a nice spot for sure. It doesn't have the grand vistas of a Maroon Bells or Dallas Divide, but its close to home. If you want to hike around or 4wd up there, there are some nice aspens on the road leading to Loch Lomond that could provide a nice scenic. On the downside, these aspens are subjected to strong winds and may lose their leaves very quickly.

Nice pics, Jeff! Your gamble should pay off, assuming that the winds don't strip the leaves from the trees. McClure and Kebler still had plenty of green this past weekend. Some stands will be past prime, but the majority should still be looking very good.
