Bit of a record shot really, from a couple of weeks ago, although i'm fairly happy with it for now.
This is my first efforts with these birds, so it gives me something to improve on, hopefully.
These birds are fairly tame around my local harbour, yet are very timid further along the coast {where i took this}, and this bird kept a nervous eye on me as i made my approach.
Light levels were poor, and had to resort to shooting wide open.
Hi Alan,
I think Brian`s right: looks like a Shag to me, too.
It`s got a steepish forehead, thin bill, and a hint of a crest, all of which say Shag to me.
I`m no expert, though!
Nice picture, btw.
Hmmm, hopefully it is a shag............I'm so used to seeing cormorants along my coast, that shags never entered my mind. I shall dig out my books
Nick, i would like to make the conference, but although {on a map} it is extremely close to me, it is difficult for me to get to {as i rely on public transport}. In fact it is probably easier for me to get to London from here.
I can easily get to Carlisle/ Wigton/ Maryport though, so if i can hitch a lift from either of those train stations {assuming the train arrival times are suitable for someone to kindly pick me up}, then it would be perfect.
The only other stumbling block is that my daughter is due to have a baby during January {not sure of the likely dates yet}, and i would need to make an urgent trip to london.
Sooooooo, at the moment i'm hopeful i could make the conference, but won't know for certain, just yet.

Nice shot Alan and like others have said it's far from a 'record shot'!
And yes it looks like a Shag to me.

Count me in for a shag vote as well - or something similar
All of a sudden i am quite pleased with this shot now
Had it been a cormorant, i feel i could eventually improve on it, as i have a lot more opportunities with those birds, and would hope to gain a full frame vert, with a stopped down lens {light levels permitting}.
cheers
Alan

Love the feather detail from this dorsal view. Could do with a little punch (although that's probably my crappy screen), but I'd be well happy if this was my first attempt

To call it a record shot isn't doing you, or it, justice
(ps - hope you've put your name down for the conference as it's in your neck of the woods this year!).
Not 100% i get them mixed up a bit.
Cheers
Brian
