Thought I'd put a feeder out this morning just to see how the big Sig copped with BG's at short subject distances; something I've been dreading to be honest, as under normal circumstances I find the bokeh a bit harsh and 'choppy'.

Quite pleasantly surprised to be honest - I wasn't expecting the BG to be as smooth as it is.

Wee birdie was about 18" inside the minimum focus distance - I tried focussing at various points but even at f10 I just hadn't got the DoF, and the little sod wouldn't stay still enough to get a focus stack sequence.

Perhaps it's a bit tight for some too but this isn't a crop!

Nice to see a juvy Goldie though.

Techs
D2Xs + 300-800mm @ 800mm
1/1000th @ f10
ISO 400
Manual focus

ViewNX + CS3

As ever, thanks for looking :toast: :toast:

Sharp and well exposed-may have been better in portrait but not too shabby as is

Yeah nice and sharp and DOF looks fine to me. Never seen a juvie. Nice one :toast:

Well detailed Andy,

A bit tight, even for me, but looks suitable for adding a touch of canvas if you feel the need.

The beginnings of the red head plumage is a nice touch to the image!!

Hi Andy

Nice shot with great detail - as you have already identified a little tight in the frame!

A touch tight, but that is not a great problem as you have full control there, I do feel that it may be a touch oversharpened, at least on my monitor....

Great to see a juvenile...
