Durdle door
I posted this one in main ESS some time ago, but I would like to know what Brits think of it. Since it was afternoon without any chances of sun hitting the rock (wrong time of year, I know), I tried a different approach. Main complaint on main forum was (from Brits) that the rock is too dark for limestone. Well, I do darken it a bit but it was dark on negative already.

135 mm large format, Delta 100, a bit of PS

Cheers,
Marko

Hi Marko,
A spot I know intimately  . I like your image very much and find the composition works really well. The light water contrasts really well against the distant arch.
My knowledge of black and white photography is sadly lacking, but for what it's worth I'd personally prefer just a little more detail visible in the arch and also in the bottom left corner.
Hope you enjoyed your visit to Dorset

would agree with justin. whilst photography lends itself to artistic interpretation, i think there should be an accurate feel for what is present in the image. i've been to DD a few times when i lived in winfrith newburgh a few months, and i don't recognise it in this image, i think it's way too dark, but i do love the feel of the water. but on the other hand what would i think if i didn't know DD? not sure....but i think this is midway between silhouette and not so i think this is where the problem lies.

regards,

mark

Little too black for me too - but the atmosphere is very prevalent :wavey:

I think i echo the above comments Marko..........a touch dark for me also.

The wave makes a fine/strong foreground area of interest, and echo's the angle of the clouds nicely, but i think a bit of tweaking of the rock {and rocks shadow} would make a real difference {providing its not overdone}

Dark imagery is very much my thing and this does have quite an ominous feel to it to me. This looks moonlit to me. I think the main area that bothers me is the water between the rock and the wave - I think a bit more definition here may help. I've attached a quick mod of some possible changes I'd make. Tristan

I'm afraid the repost has it IMO. The original is just too dark and heavy with limited tonal range. I think the symmetry between the wave line and cloud-line add real depth. Its a new take on a well documented location so its good to nudge the boundaries. :toast:
