Hi Paul,
Firstly well spotted . When I opened this I thought the BG looks like it has had some blur added in PS?(this may not be the case) As you say there is a lack of light and I feel that this could do with better lighting(out of your control) so if you can set up a similiar "set" on a brighter day (with reflector)it would be well worth a return. The image compositionally wise could do with a bit more room at the top and removing the OOF leaf bottom left and including more of the red leaf bottom right. A bit more needed on the levels/curves and saturation just to give some more oomph.
A good find but I'm a little undecided on this one.My first instinct was that whilst the leaf is very eye-catching and contains a great combination of colours I find it's a little too dominant and takes the attention away from the fungi. On the other hand however, it does contrast very well with the muted surroundings and if the leaf was intended as the main subject then in this regard it works quite well.
I'm a big fan of pristine fungi images and also images showing them as-found, imperfections and all, but in this case I might have been inclined to maybe remove the brown leaf bottom right and more importantly the out of focus object in the bottom left corner.
I guess we all see slightly different things within our images, and for me, i would have liked the top of the fungi to also have been within the dof, as my eye is quickly drawn to that area.
Well seen
