With all the mixed color reports this Fall it seemed liked timing was really going to be key.
Thanks to Todd, Don and Jimmy G. for the timely nudge to get the heck out of the house and down to the San Juans last weekend. With lowered expectations I was pleasantly surprised with good color conditions. The stormy weather added that additional element to make it a very worth while trip. Here are some of the images:
Although I drove alone I got to hang and shoot with Don G., Kalin, Rene and Rich. The fog Kalin and I caught at Bridal Veil Falls was definately cool to watch and shoot.

Derek... Nice shootin' bro! You have some grabbers there! Note to self... Listen not to thy wifely half.... Listen not to thy wifely... listen to fellow photogs... go ye forth and and make digital images! Lo fill thy cards with megapixels!
It was great to hook up with you. You have some real winners in there. ( your stream shots are much better than Rene & mine) I think it may be some of the strongest stuff from you I have seen. Great job!
Next year 4x5?

Congratulations Derek! You have some beautiful images in there. I like the clouds over Sneffels. You've made me definitely wish I was there. Well done!

Great shots in there. It makes me wish I was able to take as much time off in Oct. as I did in Sept. since the colors seemed to have changed a little later this year in the San Juans. You found some nice yellows. Those foggy shots of the falls are unique and a definitely something I wouldn't mind having in my portfolio. Nice job.

You got some nice ones, Derek. You'll have to get some prints of some of those. I haven't even sorted mine yet. Other projects pending. Better get busy and see if I have a fall colors contest entry!

Thanks guys,
It really was a great photo op filled weekend with such outstanding conditions. It seems to me that timing is everything (f8 and be there) in shooting fall colors in the San Juans, especially since I wanted more peak colors and *clouds* this year. This forum helps tremendously in that regard with all the early goer reports and recon.
Rich, there was more than one occasion when I wished I was shooting with a 4x5. My predawn star shots @30 seconds & ISO 800 are terribly noisey with the old 10D. But I am still saving for the new 5D II coming out next year. So a 4x5 will probably have to wait until after that. But I agree that it is defiantely the best tool for the job in many situations. I just don't know if I would have the patience for it.
Thanks for the compliments on the stream shots. Coming from you that means alot since I really admire your work. I seem to have an affinity for water (lakes, streams, rivers, waterfalls, oceans). I am always looking for it and fascinated by it. So shooting it is just a natural way for me to capture some of that fascination.

Derek – looks like you were able to take home a nice selection of phenomenal shots! Great job! We had a good time hanging out with you and Kalin.

Nice stuff, Derek. My favorite is the first one... great color and balance.

Thanks Rene,
I really look forward to seeing some of your 4x5 shots. Do you normally develop them after a trip then scan them from home first to see which ones you like the most? I would imagine drum scanning is reserved for the best of the best.
I wasn't able to get as far down CR 5 or 7 as you guys or Don did because of the mud and driving a low clearance car. But I did manage to find a few openings along CR 5 before leaving on Sunday. The colors down in that area were super saturated. So much so that I had to desaturate image #39 a bit because it looked too over the top. LOL...
Wonderful collection Derek! You really did pick the perfect weekend, and made the most if it for sure! I too love the river shots. Glad you decided to get out!

Some of your finest work Derek. Thanks for sharing!

Derek - I like the shot of me. All you see is my rear end!!! That was Rich and I shooting close-ups of leaves in the mud puddle. I made sure to stir up the puddle with my tripod so Rich couldn't get any shots!
I am glad you got at least a little way down CO5 - that place was a Goldmine.
To answer your question - after I get my 4x5s developed, I immediately edit them and I shred anything that is no good. I only drum scan those images from which I intend to make a print. Everything else is filed away. I'll let you know as soon as I get some of these on the web.
I do the same as Rene and throw stuff out and eventually go through the boxes and organize them ( I dont have a system like Scott B yet ). As far as scanning since I dont shoot a ton of pics on LF I find that I usually bypass my epson scanner and will go right to drum scanning 1st.
