I just promised a bunch of my relatives that I’d be in Cool, CA (just east of Sacto) for dinner in mid December. Rather than deal with flying over the holidays, I’ve decided to drive. I’m thinking on the way down, I’ll drive straight through. (Ugh!) But on the way back, I’ll break it up into 2 days. That means I’ve got a morning/evening in Medford or Eugene. It’s not primarily a photo trip, but I figure I’ll certainly tote the camera along. Anything especially interesting that’s not too far from I-5?

Thanks,
Sean

Take an extra day and go to Lassen. Its about 50 miles off I-5, but its worth it (better check beforehand to make sure the road is still open though - it summits out at about 7000 feet).

You will also go right past Mt. Shasta. There are some good winter vantage points up near Castle Lake. If you take a loop up Hwy 62 from Medford to Hwy 230 and then down Hwy 138 to rejoin I-5 at Roseburg you will go along the upper Rogue River (see my current ESS post HERE) past Crater Lake, Diamond Lake, Mt. Theilsen and then down the upper North Umpqua. In December things will be pretty bleak and probably covered in snow higher up, but all you would need is one good sunrise or sunset to add some color. Right outside Medford, a hike up one of the Table Rocks can lead to some good photos in the right conditions. Good luck!

Sean, not sure how close to I-5 you mean. There's not a bunch say 15 minutes off the freeway except for maybe Castle Crags or some basic comps of Shasta. Those might be your best bet...but not sure if your trying to stay around a populated place for staying overnight.
