D80, 18-200mm @ 200, f/7.1 @ 1/3200sec ISO 1250 (duh!)
She looks like a sweet little climber babe doesn't she? She did really well climbing but it was the lowering off part that freaked her out.

Been there done that one Mark. When my son first started climbing he had no issues climbing up, but going down... that was another story. Eventually he got past it, and I am sure your daughter will too! Always good to see parents getting their kids outdoors. My son goes with me on most hikes and backpack trips now. It's a great experience.

Next time I'll belay from the top so that I don't have to fight the drag of the rope counteracting Ellen's own weight. It would have been fine if I had been up there at the top when she started to go down.

She's braver than me!

That's for sure, Rick.

They are awesome photos! They will be worth a lot twenty years from now when she climbs Everest and K2 and becomes the world's most famous climber!

Geez, Mark, I don't even want to think of Milton doing that. I couldn't be up there with him with the heights and all.
Lots of kids at the REI rock in the Pearl go up fine and then look down and *gulp* She looks in great form there.

Is that a bowline on a bight, or a double figure 8?
Posted by Mark Hudon on October 15, 2007 at 6:18 PM
Neither.
A Bowline on a Bight is a bowline tied with a loop of rope (a bight). You end up with three loops. If you didn't have a harness you could tie one of those and use two loops for your legs and one for your waist. If you wrapped the rope around your waist a few times and finished it off with a bowline then that would be a Bowline on a Coil.
When I'm sport climbing and falling on the rope a lot I tie in with a Bowline on a Barrel since it's easier to untie. If I'm trad climbing, climbing long routes, I tie in, as Ellen is here, with an Eight knot threaded back on itself. Technically, a Figure 8 on a Bight. ;-)
