Interesting press release on Canon USA

Canon 800mm Press Release

Looks genuine, unless some clever geezer has hacked the Canon website.

800mm f5.6L seems an odd choice given the 600+1.4x TC is the same (slightly longer) focal length.

Maybe it uses DO? and is smaller/lighter than the 600mm (but not cheaper!)

cheers

It's on Rob Galbraith along with a 200mm F2. I don't think it is DO.

Sean,

Nope, I have a 1.4 converter:wink: and if it is DO (which would be a mistake given what I have seen of the 400mm) I definately ain't interested.

Interesting news, but I think I'll stick with my 600.

Can't really see the point - if it was f4 then that might be different

Now their 1200mm f5.6 is a bit of a monster and definately worth asking the missus for at Christmas

If it was an f4 then might I raise my eyebrows a little, it would be interesting to know what the minimum focus distance is; but the longer the lens, the more wobbly air there is between you and the subject!

Minimum focus distance is supposed to be 6.0m. For comparison, the 600/f4 is 5.5m and the 500/f4 is 4.5m. This should give a maximum magnification of 0.15x, like the 400/f2.8, as opposed to the 0.12x of the 500 and the 600.

The image quality is expected to be better than the 600/f4 according to the official Canon release.

Size and weight are the critical features imo.

Also consider that the use of teleconverters does slow down your auto focus so one might assume that this lens would be more nimble at this focal length than a 600 + 1.4x.
I believe that Canon suggest a reduction in lens drive speed of somthing like 50% for a 1.4x and 75% for a 2x depending on the lens in question.
