been a while since my last posting here. Been following
fall migration of raptors in southern sweden lately and
training hard with the new 300mm, but still not happy
with my flight shots.
So thought i'd post this little fella' instead.
Fall colors and the rust on the fence match him
quite good i think
Does anyone have an idea as to why all my stationary shots
turn out just fine, but all the flightshots are crap ?
have alot of flightshots under my belt with the old 400mm 5.6
but just cant get this new lens to work for me

Looks fine to me. Nice and sharp too!
As for BIF, which lens are you using? The 400mm has cracking AF speed, maybe the range is longer so more throw of the motor?
Hi Paul,
the new lens is a 300mm f/2.8... i have used it alot with a 2x converter and the wren
above is also taken with the 2x.
the problem is that with BIF the image get all fuzzy and soft... even slow moving brids
like kites at 20-25 meters gets soft. for BIF theres no apparent difference between the
2x and the 1.4x converters... and it makes no difference if IS is on or off at the given speeds.

Have you tried without the TC? I know 300mm is short, but when i used my Sig 300 f2.8 the AF was definately slower than with no TC. This was why i went for a 500 f4.5 in the end.
hmm no i must admit i havent tried that. based on what i have seen other people
do with this lens + converters, i would think it is fully capable of handling the converters
and im confident that it had plenty of time to lock on to target every time. Shutterspeeds
around 1/2500sec at f8 with the focus locked should be sharp, at least in my book
but the lens does not agree. it's true the lens gets slower with the converters on, but not
that much i think, a slow moving kite or gull should be an easy target....
im running out of good ideas
