One from Acadia
I've been in Maine for a week, heading home today... here's one selection from among 1500 photographs made in the last 5 days. This was on one of the nature trails around Jordan Pond in Acadia NP.

Canon 30D, Tamron 18-200 XR Di II. In the interest of extreme minimalism in gear, I've been using this single lens for the past month; so far I like it... it's nice to travel light, and the images from this lens are very good - though I miss the IS from Canon 28-135. Tamron has announced a new 28-300 lens with VC (Vibration Compensation) but have delayed shipping of the Canon-mount version due to reported technical problems. We'll see where that goes...

If you display this upside-down, you'll be required to issue a parental advisory.

Very interesting, Nat. The mind can take this in a lot of different directions. I like the strong grahical qualities here, and the contrasting red and green. Not sure if it's .jpg compression or a DOF issue, but the very bottom looks soft, mostly in the middle near where the stick ends.

Heehee, Todd, said what I was thinking, but maybe you don't need to view it upside down. Love the colors and comp, Nat.

Nice shot Nat. Acadia is one parks I have not visited yet, but high on my list of fall locations. You have any more to share? I'd love to see some more of the area.

Great shot! I really like that red leaf. Really draws the viewer in.

I like the leaf breaking the symmetry of the image. Nice!
Todd & Laurent - so what are you guys reading (looking at) in your sparetime?

Interesting comp, Nat. I think the bottom half would make a good shot also, taking advantage of the angles.

I am offended and shocked! This sort of picture does not belong on this forum!

Nice variety of colors here. I'd be interested in seeing some more from your trip.

Thanks for the feedback. Here is another one from the trip, in the blueberry fields outside Union, ME.

And a couple watching the sunrise...

And one abstract from a series made on this trip... all done in-camera....

Really beautiful, serene images Nat. A maybe impertinent question - how did you set up the exposure for the sunrise? I love the way you got the colors and didn't blow out the sun. was the cloud cover enough to tone it down? i also like the abstract. You've got me playing with some similar ideas.

Dan- thanks for the comments. Re: exposure for the sunrise - I metered off the clouds at middle right, and bracketed by 1/3 stops up to a full stop in both directions. In the end, though, the camera's metering was spot-on, and the indicated "correct" exposure was the best one. The sun, although very bright, was small enough in the overall composition as to not affect the exposure as much as I might have thought it would.
