I've not managed to get out much during the last few (amazing) days but this morning I made it up to Bear. I was going to head to Dream but the sky in the east was clear and there was this huge cloud over Longs which looked like it would light up very nicely, and it did! The light was amazing this morning and I shot a variety of compositions. I've only processed three of them so far, but wanted to share a few seconds of my view this morning. Wish you could have been here. I realize that the shadow area is a bit dark. I'll keep trying to pull a bit more out, but this at least gives you an idea of the light that was there.

Wow, this is absolutely killer, Erik! I wish I'd been there.

um, WOW!

Here's a link to another shot from this morning. This second one is HDR as I really struggled to hold back the highlights without loosing all the shadow detail. Ugh! Even with the HDR I didn't fully succeed as it would look too unreal if I did it much more than I've done. http://morninglight.us/forum/07/1017a.jpg
Killer! Who cares about, or even sees the dark area? I love the glow on Long's summit.

I really like the 2nd shot (1st link).
But I'm disappointed... your title lead me to expect a wildlife shot.

Nice shots Erik! I don't mind the dark shadows at all... it's natural. My favorite shot is the first one of the ones with the rocks in the foreground - just awesome!

Hey Erik, love them all, but the last 2 are really good (love your strong foreground). And *killer* job on the HDR!!

The first shot is purely awesome! It really creates a nice mood of a beautiful sunrise. The HDR is very nice, but I think I prefer the more subdued look of the first post.

I also prefer the first post. The HDR appears to be suffering where the clouds moved between exposures.

Erik, they are all wonderful! Wow. What a morning indeed. That first one is my favorite.

Beautiful shot! I love the color of the sky.

Wow is right! Great shots Erik.

Monster Shot!

OK. Those deserve at least one more WOW! Absolutely beautiful...

One word: #2!
Seriously, these are all pretty sweet, but #2 rocks. I'd be tempted to darken the foreground rocks a little to force the eye up into the frame where Longs and the clouds are doing their thing. I know that you've said you need to get more landscape orientations into your image mix, but that vertical seems like a money shot to me.

Wow, Eric, these are stunning! #2 would make a nice, big print in your gallery.

Theyre all fantastic! The second (HDR) is the best comp and light, but i have to admit the HDR is a problem as Mel mentioned. Cant beat that sky though!

Wow, incredible light, dramatic mountains, great colors! In other words, this sucks!

#2 is too sweet for words!!!

Yowsers! These are really, really nice Eric. The posted one and your first link are just killer. Can't believe I've missed this thread, but glad it came back to the top again. The first link is my favorite and you did a very good job on the blend, just a little more work on the tree line toward the sun and brightening/cropping the very top (seems too dark compared to the rest of the sky) and this one is nailed. I'll bet you get a lot of sales on that one.
Thanks for sharing your continued excellent work.

29 repliesOh well, here's another one that was taken just as the show was starting http://morninglight.us/forum/07/1016b.jpg. This last one is a single exposure.
I've been dreaming of a sunrise like this all summer, congrats! That's what you get for getting out all the time.
But I'm disappointed... your title lead me to expect a wildlife shot.
