For those with or without focus problems another snippet from Rob Galbraith....
"We're hearing from a large and growing number of photographers this evening that Canon USA's customer care centre is advising EOS-1D Mark III owners who call in that a fix for the camera's AI Servo autofocus problems is approximately two weeks away, that it will involve replacing the sub-mirror (a mirror behind the main reflex mirror that passes light to the autofocus sensor module) and that customer care reps are taking down contact information from those customers who would like to be notified when the fix is available."

It does indeed seem that there is finally some good news on the MKIII's focus issues. However, personally I shall continue to be patient and wait for confirmation that this fix is indeed the solution and they identify the serial number range of the new production models before I put my money down.
At last!!! I have NEVER been happy with that camera, even after sending it back to Canon.
If this news is true and not another "Rumour" well the shop where I have got my camera better get ready because a BIG mouthfull is coming their way!!

Ah, is this also why there has been a drop recently in the price of a new 1D3, I have seen them advertised for £2450.
John if you get that serial number feel free to post it on here.
Good news and there does seem to be some truth in it, Mine has been problematic in certain circumstances and it will be a great camera when this problem is fixed, I knew that they would have to do something before the 1DS3 comes out, Seems that the camera will have to be sent back for repair so that will be 2-3? weeks without a camera-Great

I've read(in other forums). That the recently made 1D3 has had the fix done already.
So the one i just got today will......fingers crossed......be alright
Off to have a play with it >

Alan I wonder if you would mind sharing where you have read that and does it quantify what "recently made" actually means. Like many others I am keen to lay my money down but will not do so until the lottery on whether you get a good one or not is over.
I hope your bread lands jam side up on this.

John its just what i've read by what other people have read.So there cant be any truth in the statement at the moment.Until something like that is released from Canon, saying what date they have started to fix the problem.

QUOTE - I just got off the phone with Canon support, and as of TODAY they finally have a statement they can give to 1d3 owners who call in about the focusing issue.
THEY HAVE IDENTIFIED A FIX, AND IT IS NOT FIRMWARE. IT'S A "SUBMIRROR ASSEMBLY" THAT MUST BE REPLACED.
Personally I suspected all along it would be a physical item, as firmware can't explain the success variation reported by users here.
The support rep, who I shall leave unnamed, said they are to start collecting names of owners to contact, in addition to going off of existing registration data (Personally, mine was not officially registered) to set up RMA's for resolution (I will obviously register at some point to get the $100 certificate, I know, I know... ).
He was helpful in taking my info, and if you have not already registered, you might want to do so or call in yourself to be sure you are contacted. They support guys have had to suffer almost as much as us, so be nice to them!
Also, he told me that latest production running off the line has been corrected.

Thanks Alan, I have in fact seen that and was rather hoping you had found something more specific. The money in my pocket has gotten significantly hotter today but I'm still not confident enough to hand it over just yet. Although I did ring one vendor today to enquire about when they received their stock but all they could tell me was "very recently".

Just noticed that the Galbraith site is reporting that Canon is planning to provide a simple way for EOS-1D Mark III shooters to identify if their camera is among those affected soon.

John, I would be interested to know how we are going to test the MKIII for possible AF issues.
IMO if they have redesigned the component that is causing the issues all the MKIII's will need to be fixed. The problem usually arises shooting in bright light and high temperatures so for us in the UK we may not experience the problems till next year when the camera is out of warranty. I will definitely be sending mine in for repair once things calm down a bit. Hopefully Canon UK will have heard of the FIX by then
P.S, This camera has performed better for me than any Nikon or Canon 30D camera I have owned before.
Cheers

Has there been anything mentioned on the Canon website with regards to the fix?

About time !!!! Not sure how its going to fix the error 99 and other problems
Personally I'm out of Canon and happily shooting Nikon Best thing I've ever done !!!!
Maybe you can explain what the relevance is of your reply to this thread? We all know that Fabiola and yourself moved to Nikon because of your bad experience with Canon.
This thread was about a possible solution and nothing else. I have seen already too many negative threads about Canon and can do without this one.Naturescapes has about 10 on their digital imaging forum, take your pick! So let this thread be what it is: a message about a possible solution. Nothing more nothing less.
