I waited a long while to get this or similar shot. Either I missed the owl returning or he came back the wrong route. This time I watched him go down in the field set everything up, which is something else you can easily make a mistake with, and waited. From the moment he started back I just kept shooting. he made a 180 degree pass by me and looked at me with disgust, but I am sure he enjoyed breakfast.

Hi Dave - try a comp like this.
What Image edit software are you using?
Nice capture though - full eye contact AND prey - it doesn't come any better

Photoshop CS3 which I have about 5% knowledge of, another reason to join this forum. Explain to me what you did to change my image and why you think your comp improves mine. To my very limited knowledge this photo is about the the image of the owl not sure by moving the image it changes much. However this is a rank amateur view so any explaination by anyone would be welcome.
Hello Dave
Andy's version gives the owl space to fly in to, which does improve the image. It can be done by either cropping, or cloning in a little more room, or even cutting and pasting from the other side.
Excellent capture though, and the head turn is the icing on the cake.
Best wishes
Phil
Hi Dave,I really like the eye contact in this image and yes ,Andy has improved the composition by giving the owl some space to fly into...............wish I had the chance of some barn owl pics

Hi Dave - sorry not replied earlier - Phil and Barrie have answered for me
Just pasted the image into a new layer, jogged it to the right, flattened the image then cloned the bg on the blank strip of canvass - 2 second job, only done roughly, and in Fireworks at that, as I don't have CS on my net machine.
I'm really envious of you having access to these great birds - well done again
And keep posting

Dave another great shot
Also you could of croped this to a portait having the wing near the top right corner, then leave the rest as is.
