I realize this is a nature photogs forum, but you all seem to be into just about every type of photography so i thought i'd posse my question.
I've recently been moving into doing portraits and would like to get some decent studio lighting (i've done all previous work outside but am looking at doing some maternity shots). can anyone recommend good lighting that isn't going to break the bank but could last a few years? i've never had studio lighting before, but i can assume i'll need some umbrella lights, although that's as far as my knowledge goes. i know B&H has lots of lighting, but i have no idea what i'd need for a small beginner studio. i'd likely do all the work in my home office (approx. 10'x6'), if that makes a difference.
THANKS FOR THE HELP!!

Hi Amy,
Not an area I know anything about but the photo.net forum (http://photo.net/bboard/forum?topic_id=1824) might be helpful. Pay particular attention to posts by Ellis Vener, he's especially helpful. Let us know how it goes!

I'd second Rene's recommendation for Alien Bees for getting started with lighting...

I'm a member of SENP... just decided to drop into the Rocky Mouintain forum to see what's happening out west. Anyway, I saw your post and thought you might be interested in checking out http://www.studiolighting.net/ and http://strobist.blogspot.com/. Both are very helpful lighting sites with tons of free information.
