Beautiful fall color in northern Michigan

Spent this last weekend in northern Michigan enjoying the fall color. The Maples in the Boyne Falls/City area were spectacular. We also checked out Sleeping Bear Dunes but the lakeshore trees were almost totally green. With the wind coming off the lake I'm guessing that the leaves get knocked off the trees soon after they turn color anyway. We did get to see some surfers and kite surfers at the Frankfort beach though.

Great colors and views, Lars. How was the climb up the Empire Bluff?

We didn't exactly climb up Empire Bluffs, just hiked the official trail which is pretty short and easy. I've never hiked up Empire Bluffs (didn't even know you could, they have a lot of it closed off to curtail erosion) but I bet it's as grueling as hiking up the Sleeping Bear Bluffs.

That's what I meant, the trail. I know that climbing the dunes is frowned upon, and wish they would stop people from climbing the mother dune at SBD. :frown:

I don't remember much about the trail to Empire Bluffs, I think the trees were mostly green. There was some nice color right by the trailhead. I'd love to catch the leaves at full color from that viewpoint.

For some reason the colors nearer Lake Michigan are later than say 20 miles inland, but I have caught the colors at SBD in fall a couple times. One of my favorite spots was a meadow south of Empire on the north side of M22. When you step into the meadow, you are surrounded by an awesome array from yellows to reds, among green pine trees. That is one I'd like to see again!
