Last winter was plagued with fatal accidents in Colorado's high country. If you're planning on hiking/skiing/snowshoeing around the high country this winter you may want to consider taking an avalanche awareness/rescue course. If you're like me, you've been put off by the high cost (hundreds of dollars) of these classes in the past. Good news...you can go for FREE! Friends of Berthoud Pass is offering free avy awareness classes in the near future (next class is tomorrow). I went to one of their classes last night and was impressed by the breadth of information presented in only 2.5 hours. The classes are led by Halsted Morris, formerly the CAIC's Chief Instructor, and one of the most respected and experienced avalanche educators in North America. Friends of Berthoud Pass will also have a hands-on class that teaches snow analysis and rescue techniques in January of '08 (most likely up at Berthoud Pass). While you won't get an Avy 1 certification by going to these classes, the information is the very same...and it's the knowledge that counts, not a piece of paper. For more information on times and dates, go to...

Cool, I think the Breckenridge class is closest to me. Sounds very worthwhile!
