I know how much you guys like bright colored leaves so I thought I'd share some photos from a recent trip to northern Michigan where many of the Maple trees were at their best. Without (real) mountains, it's a bit harder to find a panoramic viewpoint (where your view isn't blocked by trees) or come up with an interesting panoramic composition, but the display of color is just as impressive as the aspens of Colorado that I have come to know and love.
I wish I could have caught the lakeshore with some color but the trees lag behind there due to the warm(er) air coming off Lake Michigan. I am guessing the wind off the lake also blows the leaves to the ground shortly after they turn. There were strong winds when we were there which made for big waves, which brought the surfers out.

Neat tapestry of color. I like the variety in the first and last shots. I spoke with a Michagan photographer on Ohio pass this year. Sounded like the upper peninsula was a great place to shoot. Thanks for confirming that!

The upper peninsula definitely has a lot of nice places to shoot such as the Porcupine Mountains and Pictured Rocks, but lower Michigan (where these photos are from) tends to be pretty flat. Still, there are some nice bluffs along the lakeshore and some decent hills up north.

I definitely concur that Upper Michigan is a great place for fall color, usually in the 1st two weeks of October. The peak tends to move across the area from west to east as opposed to north to south due to the warming effect of Lake Superior. I've photographed there in two different years and was very happy with the results. I haven't been back there since I went digital but will probably go back in a year or two since my brother lives in Escanaba. Not only is there great color but they have a large number of photogenic waterfalls in the UP to add to the compositions.
